Interview with Lynn Crandall

What's the story behind your latest book?
Captured by Christmas, A Christmas Anthology was inspired by a desire to give readers a take on Christmas from a paranormal author, me, and a contemporary author, Lainee Cole. My story in the anthology, Snowbound, allowed me to get back in to my Fierce Hearts were-lynx world and write something more light-hearted than the series for the characters.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I'm published by traditional publishers, but with this book I wanted to go the direct route to readers. I like the idea of forging in to something new and hopefully finding success there. I respect indie authors for their determination and skill.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
For me, the joy of writing comes from the process. I like doing research and brainstorming to find characters that I feel fit my need for the story I want to write. I enjoy sending my books out into the world and giving readers not only entertainment but possibly new ways of looking at the themselves and the world.
What do your fans mean to you?
I really don't think of readers as fans. I think of them as readers. I write because I have stories to tell and I love it. It is always my hope that readers enjoy my books, and if they do, it's a great feeling. I enjoy connecting with readers and want to know about their thoughts and experiences from reading. Reading has been so meaningful to me, in so many ways. I want that for my readers.
What are you working on next?
Presently I'm working on another paranormal romance, tentatively titled Touch My Soul. It's planned to be one in a book of stand-alones in a series. In the first book, the heroine is a bounty hunter and the hero is a cop. They are a part of a group of individuals, I call them Aeons, who have incarnated on the earth to lift the population to another level. They are opposed by what I call Dark Aspects, humans who have become more dark than light. That's just a brief description. The story is complex and is challenging me to grow, which I really like.
Who are your favorite authors?
There are so many authors who I enjoy reading! It's hard to name just a few. If I stick to those who are writing now, I would say Kelley Armstrong, Kat Richarson, and Jim Butcher.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The short answer is coffee. The second short answer is my cat, Willow. The long answer is my drive to write, create, and being open to new opportunities for growing and expanding my life.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
This is a good question. I am writing most of my time. But I also love reading, biking, just reflecting, being in nature, and being with my family.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Oh, yes. I wrote a play when I was twelve. It just flowed out of me and I really liked that feeling. My first full-length romance will never see the light of day. :)
What is your writing process?
I'm like probably most authors in that characters, words, settings, what ifs, etc. are always running in my mind, even if in the background. When I begin the process, I brainstorm possible character types and conflicts. I need to fill myself with information, so I do a lot of different kinds of research. When I feel I've gathered enough solid research, I do loose character sketches and find an opening hook. The hook is important to open the story for me and from there the story flows -- sometimes almost effortlessly, sometimes it eeks out. Either way, I need to sit at my computer and keep writing, no matter what my inner voices tell me to do.
