Interview with Leigh Fossan

Published 2018-05-21.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Actually yes! My 8-year old daughter has the "first" book I wrote when I was about 7-years old. My mom bound it and everything so it felt like a real "book". It is about a husband bear and his wife who fly to Yosemite National Park, and they eat swordfish on the plane. When they land, there is no vacancy, so they have to go home. But they have so much fun that they do it all again the following week!
What is your writing process?
It involves a lot of coffee! I usually think of an overall storyline in my head, and then I work beginning-to-end. Some days I bust out several pages at a time, and other days I'm lucky to get through a paragraph.
How do you approach cover design?
When I'm not writing, I am a professional artist. And so when it comes to cover design, I tend to have a very particular concept in mind. For 'Painting Blue Water', I was lucky to find a talented cover designer (Pink Ink Designs) who understood my vision, and brought it to life!
What do you read for pleasure?
I LOVE Nina George, Nancy Thayer, Ann Patchett, and any other author who can take me away into a world of escape and beauty!
Describe your desk
My desk is white. It is covered in art, books, my computer, usually a cup of coffee, and whatever toys my daughter decides to leave on it :)
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in beautiful Vail, Colorado. I must admit I was spoiled to be raised in such a stunning environment, surrounded by the Rocky Mountains, lush forests, lakes, and rivers. Colorado was a huge part of my inspiration for 'Painting Blue Water', as readers will clearly see :)
What motivated you to become an indie author?
What really motivated me the most was how much I LOVED to read! Nothing is better than escaping into a beautifully written book.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Coffee. :) Also, my daughter, my husband, my dog. And the beautiful sunshine pouring through the windows... In Colorado we have 300+ sunny days a year!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Painting! My husband and I are both professional artists, and so our home is our studio. I also love to hike, relax at a coffee shop, drink wine with girlfriends, and read with my daughter.
