Interview with Leni Sands

Published 2013-11-30.
Who are your favorite authors?
That depends on the genre, for Crime fiction like to read Karin Slaughter and Tania Carver. I used to be quite keen on James Herbert and Stephen King but my likes and dislikes change constantly. I enjoy reading poetry as well, Ella Wheeler Wilcox for instance, who was also one of my mum's favourites, as a child I always loved Robert Louis Stevenson.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Hmmm thats a hard question...it's always much harder to get out of bed when it is cold outside and I'm lovely and cosy.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Probably reading, singing, walking - cleaning house - thinking about new ideas for writing.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Usually via recommendation by a friend or off a forum.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes,I was about 5 and it was actually about my dog Shandy and my cat Whiskey and involved the conversations they had together. They were wonderful friends, I used to pretend they had human voices and would tell everyone what they were saying...
What is your writing process?
I usually hand write my ideas developing them on paper, eventually I transfer to Microsoft Word, editing and re-editing as I go. As my idea develops so does the title. Some of my work is left for quite a while (months even years before I put it into Microsoft Word and eventually into print.

I have been known to get ideas at the bus stop or after seeing something that has caught my attention, following a personal incident or experience or someone else's.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
It was Briar Rabbit, I basically became hooked on Enid Blyton as a child an ended up reading and owning every book she ever wrote. I used to lend them out to my friends for so many days and would fine them a few pence for every day they were late returning the books. I had waiting lists for The Famous Five and The Secret Seven.
What do you read for pleasure?
Crime fiction and Poetry
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I currently own a kindle, one of the early ones but also have an e-reader on my laptop which I regularly use.
When did you first start writing?
From the moment I could hold a pen and write in straight lines.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I am working on two books at the moment, 'Dead Memories, Shattered Lives' is actually the story of my life with some embellishment, I refer to it as my autobiographical novel. The other one is a crime novel, 'Watching & Waiting' is based on a personal experience concerning drug addicts targetting elderly vulnerable people. The lead character embroils herself in their world to avenge her grandmothers death, hopefully both books will be ready for release (self-publishing) in 2014.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I enjoy writing and sharing my work. Discovering hubpages.com was a huge influence and it wasn't until I started sharing my work on there that people started suggesting I look at using Smashwords, Lulu and Amazon's Createspace.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Greatly, the site is so easy to use and the books I have uploaded so far are doing alright even though I haven't done much promoting.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Other peoples enjoyment of my work. I love hearing what they have to say about it.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything, without them I just would not carry on.
