Interview with Michael Lewis

What's the story behind your latest book?
Actually there are Ten stories in my first book of tales. Soul Train is about a train engineered by the devil, and collects souls. The Black Cat speaks for itself. Only this Black cat brings a person good luck instead of bad, until the end. Death Bed, is about a detective who is dying of cancer, and sells his soul to the devil in order to live his life to the fullest. There are other stories such as The Lands of Vulgaria, an H.P. Lovecraftian tale, Old Betty, and some poems from my poetry book 'Death Awaits The Resurrection.'
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I had no clue I was going to become an Indie author. I've been writing since 1992, and decided to publish a poetry book first with LULU.com for family. Then I began writing short stories that I had sent off to numerous magazines, only to get rejected time and time again. About that time in 2010 I started to notice a boom in Indie publishing, and decided it was time, at the ripe ol' age of 40 to jump on the wagon before I got left behind.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
It allows me to share my stories with a larger platform. Most of my stories are free, so it gives the reader a chance to see if they like my writing style or not, and gives me a greater chance of actually making sales when I do write my Novels.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Making up Characters, and seeing what they will do. Most of my characters have a mind of their own wheather I have an outline written or not.
What do your fans mean to you?
Fan's, if I had any...lol They would be my first and foremost priority beside my family. The fans will make you or break you, so you had better have respect and grant their wishes to the best of your ability.
What are you working on next?
A story about a Grizzly bear that terrorizes a Boulder Colorado community. They say there hasn't been a Grizzly sighting in Colorado since 1979, but this large killer proves them wrong.
Who are your favorite authors?
Stephen King, H.P. Lovecraft, Edgar Allan Poe, Darren Shan, and Anne Rice.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My children.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Reading, walking in the woods, spending time with the kids, and going to the beach and Nascar races.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Browsing, or facebook.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
It was back in kindergarten. A sort of sci-fi story about aliens. The teacher pinned it up out in the hall for everyone to read.
What is your writing process?
First I come up with a Working Title. This I have always done. Then I write down ideas, and little story notes before putting everything on a timeline. after that, I'll start to write the story in long hand. Writing and jotting down like a madman. Then I'll type it out on my word processor, clean up the errors and so on. Then I read, and re-read before finally publishing for everyone to read.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I didn't read much growing up. My uncles would always tell me ghost stories, and that inspired me to want to become a writer.
How do you approach cover design?
Cover design I think is very important. People do judge a book by its cover so It has to catch a persons eye and imagination.
What do you read for pleasure?
Stephen King, and the Newspaper...
