Interview with Lilliana Anderson

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in one Sydney's least desirable western suburbs. I didn't really know any different growing up, but as I got older and came into contact with people from the eastern suburbs, I realised how different we all were. I think it helped provide diversity in my writing, giving me different tales to tell from the perspective of all walks of life. I also set a few of my books out west, because I don't believe it's as much of 'a hole' as it's claimed to be.
When did you first start writing?
Professionally, I started writing in 2012. However, writing and creating have been the backbone of my existence since I was very small.
What's the story behind your latest book?
A band of brothers who were raised as thieves are all looking for wives. It's a five book rom-com series that is crazy and fun with plenty of drama to boot. Foolish Games is the most recent addition to this standalone series.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I was researching how to get your manuscript published, and most avenues said I needed to pay a bunch of money to get it professionally vetted before a publishing house would even look at it. I barely had two cents to rub together at the time and was about to stick all my hopes in the bottom of a drawer when I came across a blog post explaining how to publish yourself. I put the book up thinking no one would ever read it, but it somehow got found. A publishing career was born.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords have been amazing. They've promoted me, liaised for me, opened doors I couldn't have possibly found for myself, all while being great, courteous people. I owe a huge chunk of my success to Mark and his team.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Getting lost in the lives and loves of my creations--the buzz you get at the height of a story. I love reading it back later and thinking, 'Crap. I wrote this? It's not horrible!'
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything. Absolutely everything. If they weren't out there, I wouldn't have this amazing job.
What are you working on next?
An emotional drama called Paper Feathers. It's about coming home, accidental pregnancy and second chances. It's based on a woman I met many years ago at the prenatal clinic. Readers will definitely need tissues for this one.
Who are your favorite authors?
Barbara Kingsolver, Lynda LaPlante, Vi Keeland, Janet Evanovich
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My five children who need food, lol! Otherwise, I have a very pushy husky who howls at my door when she wants to be let out--no rest for the wicked!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Reading! I also love a good netflix binge.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Generally through friend's recommendations, or one the top 100 lists.
What do you read for pleasure?
I mainly read romance. I love contemporary, paranormal, and romantic comedy. I also read women's fiction, or chic lit with the occasional thriller or literary fiction thrown in.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I read on my phone mostly.
Describe your desk
I don't have a desk, lol. I had a baby and she has my office as her room now, so I sit on a recliner with my laptop and a cushion.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I do. It was about a rock star going back home only to find his high school girlfriend had a suspiciously familiar son.
What is your writing process?
I'm a bit of a pantser. I start with a basic idea and then start. I go from the beginning to the end without jumping around to write scenes then connect it all together. I take notes and research as I go along, and the only thing I really know the whole time is how the book is going to end. I have no clue how we're getting there, though! It's a journey.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
First story... If we're talking first book I ever read, it was The Twits by Roald Dahl. I thought it was so funny that I immediately picked up the next of his books and embarked on my bookworm journey. If we're talking about our first novel, mine was Flowers in the Attic. My, wasn't that an eye opener for a twelve-year-old girl! I discovered that I loved drama and relationships (even the taboo ones) and that no book was any good unless it had kissing in it.
What’s your favorite under-appreciated novel?
A book I wrote with my husband called, Till There Was You. It was a beautiful story about love after loss that never got a bad review, still, it never took off.
What drives you to keep on writing?
The people inside my head won't quit telling me stories, lol. I'd write even if it wasn't my job, because I love it immeasurably.
