Interview with Lilly Avalon

Published 2021-10-17.
When did you first start writing?
The earliest I remember penning stories was in first grade. There was a classmate who was writing their own stories, so I wanted to do it, too. I'm pretty sure I was writing a cat version of 101 Dalmatians at one point. I dabbled in writing off and on for years, mostly coming up with story ideas rather than actually writing them. The romance stories started in my teen years, though.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
When I was a teenager, self-publishing wasn't a practical option and was generally considered a scam where you ended up with 1000 copies of your book sitting in the garage. I began a book review blog in 2011 and learned about how the market had changed with ebooks and ereaders. That's when self-publishing became a possibility. I did tons of research, read countless blog posts, and it felt like the right decision for me.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest books are part of a novella series about men in three different unconventional jobs: a stripper, an escort, and a porn star (in that order). I liked the idea of tackling stories surrounding each, how they meet the girl, and how they fall in love with her, not to mention the speedbumps along the way regarding their often viewed as taboo employment.
What is your writing process?
First of all, I choose my idea. I have hundreds of them and I'm constantly adding to the list. I like to select one that has the most potential to be made into a complete story. What I do is go over the timeline in my head to make sure I have a beginning, middle, and end. Once I've been able to visualize the main aspects of the story, that's when I get the pen and paper (or computer and keyboard) and begin writing out all the details I need to know before starting the outline: title, characters, approximate length, etc. Then I'll get to work on the outline. I like to go chapter by chapter, writing about 200-300 words per chapter to give myself a rough idea of where the story needs to go. After the outline is complete and I begin writing, some of the story may change along the way, but at least I have a rough idea where it's all going.
How do you approach cover design?
I consider my story and then browse stock photos. Finding the right photo often takes longer than actually designing the cover. I'll usually make at least a couple of mock-ups of what I'm thinking, testing out different fonts and colors until I'm pleased with the results.
What do you read for pleasure?
All sorts of romance! I'm addicted to romance books. While I love to read what I write (contemporary, erotica, new adult), I also enjoy reading other sub-genres like historical romance and reverse harem romance. I have also been known to pick up books on writing or publishing, as well as a psychological thriller here and there.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
My husband and I co-own an eBay business, so I spend most weekdays working with him on it. For fun, I like to work on needlecraft projects like cross-stitching and sewing. When my husband and I are together on weekends, you'll often find us thrifting or having TV show marathons.
What are you working on next?
I'm currently outlining two novellas (contemporary romance, one is super steamy and one is a little bit steamy) and am aiming to work on them during NaNoWriMo. The aim is to reach 50,000 words between the two stories. Whether I'll be able to accomplish this in November or not is up in the air, but as long as I can get a good jump start I'll be happy.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
When I pick up one of my books months or even a year after I write it and get that giddy feeling when reading it. I love that feeling.
What do your fans mean to you?
They mean everything to me! Their kind words, their lovely reviews, just everything about them. Their enthusiasm for my next book and their excitement over my latest release. I simply love it all. They're amazing. When readers tell me how much they've enjoyed my books, it makes me want to never stop writing!
