Interview with Linda Rae Sande

What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The sense of accomplishment! Spending hours in front of a computer can be very unproductive – Facebook, Pinterest, blogs – but using some of that time to create a story means I have something to show for it. Life is short, and I don't want to look back and think that I wasted a good deal of it in cyberspace. When someone is entertained by my stories, all the better.
What do your fans mean to you?
An ego boost! Seriously, I so appreciate the feedback I get from my readers – good and bad – because it means they're reading and relating to my stories. And I love meeting them at conventions and book fairs and hearing about which characters are their favorite (and not so favorite).
Who are your favorite authors?
For Regencies, Eloisa James, Lorraine Heath, Sarah MacLean, Diana Gabaldon and Madeline Hunter are just a few. I was a science fiction fan first, though, so Isaac Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke are my favorites in that genre.
Do you remember the first novel you ever wrote?
Yes, and I came across it recently. I wrote it when I was in my twenties, so it was done using a typewriter. Even though it's set in the classic Star Trek universe, its storyline could easily work in another setting.
What is your writing process?
Although I start with two characters and a rough outline, I tend to be more of a "pantster" than a "planner" when I write. I rarely start at the beginning – and I don't write the chapters in the order they will be in the book. I tend to write what interests me the most at that moment. Later, when I have most of the story written, I write the "connective tissue" and stitch everything together in InDesign.
My favorite place to write is a downtown cantina where I can set up my iPad and keyboard and enjoy a drink while I write about 2000 words in an evening. I'm usually so involved in the story, I barely notice the other patrons.
What are you working on next?
Another Regency set in Grandy's world. This one will concentrate on the relationship between Lady Evangeline Everly and Lord Jeffrey Althorpe (Baron Sommers). I introduced them in "The Widowed Countess" as background characters, but I couldn't use that book to tell their story as two other couples were already featured. (My books always have two sets of couples so there's double the romance for the reader.)
How do you approach cover design?
Because I write Regency series, I know that all my covers need to have the same look and feel. The positioning and fonts of the title, author name and series name have to be consistent so that readers can easily identify the books by their appearance. Once I found a source for the images (, I hired Karen Gee at KGee Designs to do the rest.
What do you read for pleasure?
Mostly Regency romances and Entertainment Weekly.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Facebook has been a great tool for advertising my books, not only because it's affordable, but because it has the necessary metrics to show the effectiveness of ads and the ability to target ads to very specific audiences. There is a Facebook page for each of my books, and the ads come right from the posts on those pages. I haven't been at this long enough to have street teams or a dedicated admin to handle book releases, but my sister has been a huge help in sharing my book posts with her friends.
I occasionally run ads in online magazines, on romance websites and in convention books to reach the audience that may not be on Facebook, but I have no way to easily track sales that might result from those ads.
Describe your desk
Besides messy? My desk is the corner of an L-shaped counter with cabinets above and drawers to the left and right. The counter to the right is eight feet long and about six inches higher than the one on which my iMac sits. Because I'm left-handed, the remaining surface to my left (about two feet) is where I take notes as I do research and includes a box of tissues, a container of pens, a two-tiered file holder (which is overflowing with papers), Post-it notes, a digital camera and my iPad. A printer and a router sit behind the iMac. On the wall to my left (and under the upper cabinets) is a cork board where I hang up the character sheets for each book. Next to that is a wall calendar. To help with some of the paperwork, I'm about to install a wall-mount file holder above the printer.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I was cleaning my bedroom when "My Fair Lady" came on the television. After watching the movie for a few minutes, I remembered it was based on the play "Pygmillion", a story that's been adapted to the screen in other movies like "Pretty Woman" and "She's All That". I started wondering why it's always the woman who has to be reformed. I figured it was time to change up the story so that it's a man – in this case, a groom in the household's stables – who the aristocratic daughter tutors to be a gentleman. That way, I could use the title, "My Fair Groom", to work in two ways – a reference to the man's position, and to him being the groom in their eventual wedding. The twist in the story is that, as the estranged son of an earl, the young man is already a gentleman. He thinks learning to bow and dance and behave like a gentleman will be easy. Of course, he finds it more difficult than he expects. The book was fun to write and, despite its length, only took about six months to write.
