Interview with Lisa Powell

Describe your desk.
*Laughing* A mess! I have my laptop to my right, hooked up to my 22 in monitor in the middle, with my key board hooked up to my laptop, with my wireless mouse hooked up to my lap top. My coffee cup to my left. My note books sitting in front of me and paper work scattered all over the place. And oh cell phone sits on the left. Speakers are shoved in there as well, so yeah a mess. I get my feet caught in my keyboard cord...LOL Oh and don't forget the light and a small clock. I know there is a time set on my laptop, but it seems I always look left.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Oh gosh, it was years ago, I was still in grade school. The name was called, The Boxcar Children. How the writer portrayed the children living in this boxcar. A family of siblings if my memory serves me right. They wanted to stay together and not be separated. It meant a lot because as a child me and my own siblings were separated.
What's the story behind your first published book, Captured by Fate?
*Smiling* There are a number of things. I am 5' 1 and at the time I was 115 pounds, like my character Kate. I got a call to come work construction, concrete. Sense was a female, this was in 1989 mind you. I put up with a lot of crap. Some 'men' didn't want to work with me or help me. They would rather stand there and watch me hurt my self then lend a hand. They would tell me the wrong things to do, trying to get me in trouble or fired. And let's not forget about the sexual harassment either. I would go home crying. My husband, my hero *smiles*. He would want to go up there, but I would stop him because I didn't want more problems. Like Max, my male character, my husband was big and strong. He had a fierce look when he was mad. Enough to scare anyone away, and he did. People didn't expect me to last long at this job and here I am ready to retire, *smile* I made it. But the day in question that gave me the idea for the story, It was a very hot day, we were drilling holes, the dust was every where, the water truck was way across the job site and traffic was zooming by. I put some of my personal experiences in that story, the hardships, the physical pain, not going to the bathroom all day. And not backing down to the cruelty. And once your on a roll a story just unfolds. I never meant it to be a series, but it was.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes I do, It was called In the Mind of Misty. It was in 1985. I wrote long hand on a legal pad. It was about a girl who was always worried about what other people thought. She was very conservative, she had a good job but led a lonely life. But she always had this wild, erotic fantasy. One day she and her sister went shopping. She saw this black leather dress that zipped up the front. It went perfect with her fantasy. She purchased this dress unknowingly to her sister and hides it away. One day she tried the dress on and was looking into the mirror and her sister caught her. Her sister begged her to were the dress to a party she refused. That night at the party she saw this man she simply fell head over heels for. She had a dream he was the man of her fantasy. Then one night her fantasy comes true, the dress, the man, the erotic sex. She leaves and thinks she will never see him again. She stores the dress away. She lived out her fantasy, until the man shows up at her house. He is the best friend of her sisters boyfriend. Talk about Shock!
What inspired you to write?
Well, I always like to write. I wrote poems at 16. When I got married, in 1983, my husband was a roofer, he worked with his dad and they worked in the Detroit area. I worked in a small factory in Snover, we lived out where I worked and both our families lived in the area. They drove some times 4 hrs one way to work, depending where they were going. I worked a second shift. We never saw each other. I would write poems (that got lost all but one) about how much I missed him, extra. Then I thought, why don't I try to write a book. So I began to write to fill in the void. I began to write in long hand on a legal pad (which I still have). My first book was in 1985. Then I started another one (Long hand), still not titled and unfinished. Then I got an old an old yellow typewriter. And put my second, unfinished book on typed pages, well most of it. And then computers came into the picture. I have 40 + novels. Some unfinished. Some rough drafts. But only 8 published. So I do keep writing, but publishing is a whole new world.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Actually I sent in a manuscript and it was rejected, heartbroken. My husband took me to Staples and had them print off one of my books, one I haven't published. I was so excited to have this in my hand. My husband told me now I actually have a printed book. He always tries to make me feel better. Then I started seeing all this stuff on face book about indie authors. I didn't know what it meant at first so I looked it up. I tossed around the idea for about a year. My husband told me to go for it. I had a couple people read my book prior and they loved it. Still I was unsure, scared and not fully understanding how things worked. My husband kept telling me, you will never no unless you put it out there. So I did, with many errors, I pulled the book and re-edited. You're only one person and have read the story a million times, errors get by. Again my husband says, the more you write the better you will get. So again, I put it out there. I am sure with errors. But my husband motivated me. He is my inspiration. I love him dearly.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Juliette Douglas, Freckled Venom Copperhead (Series), Amazing! Every description is perfect. You can hear, feel, see, and almost smell everything she describes in her writing. Amazing, Amazing. Great stories, strong characters.
Kathleen Brooks, Chosen for Power, Need I say more. Amazing, witty, strong characters. I love all her books.
Diana Duncan, Sword of The Raven. Amazing writing, heartfelt fantasy love story. One I couldn't put down.
Bonnie Vanak, The Tiger & the Tomb. I learned a lot of the culture and she unraveled a great love story. Amazing scenery.
Kat Martin, Hot Rain, I love most all her books. They are full of action, adventure and oh that spice of hot romantic love.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Fist I was confused on which avenue to use. So I used them all. In the end I found Smashwords has the best ways of distributing, the easiest ways of fixing things without going through, every single, step to fix the slightest thing. I get more downloads (mostly free books but hey at least they are out there). The dashboard is easy to use, there is a lot of help if you need it. Books are sent out promptly (except Amazon). I recently pulled all my books from other places and have everything through Smashwords. And I recently figured out about the affiliate program and I am using that now with my links, darn wish I would have realized that sooner! The pre-order is great, I am using that now as well. So there are a lot of things smashwords offers that helps to contribute to success, you just need to use it.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
*Laughing* Getting peace inside my head! You have no idea what it's like when you have all these characters running around inside your head wanting their story to be told! It drives you mad it tell you, MAD!! On a lighter note, if I can make some one, happy or make their day, or even inspire them for some reason. Like my tax man, I use the same person every year he is in his late 70's. He was talking about writing a book a couple years ago. I told him I was a writer/author and we talked for a while. The next year he was contemplating about the different avenues in which to publish and how much it cost. We talked more. This year I go there
and he smiled. 'I published my book.' He went over to a drawer and pulled out his book. He tells me, if it wasn't for me, he would have never taken that first step and published.
It's a boy scout book, with camp fire spooky stories. With all the legends and how the camp came to be. He was a boy scout at this camp. The camp is still open today, he made is money back and all proceeds go to the camp. He wrote an inscription to me and handed me the book. My husband was so proud and I was almost speechless. I may not be famous or a millionaire. My books may not have changed anything, but being a writer did plus, he saved me money on my taxes, *grin* That was a great feeling, me inspiring someone. Someone who indeed is very profitable in selling his book.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything. Fan's are a big part of a writers inspiration.
How do you approach cover design?
Actually it takes a long time. I take pictures of everything. When I say everything I mean it, you would be surprised. After the book is written and I have the title, I search for that picture that stands out with the book. Sometimes it takes forever. I do have a person who lets me search through her photo's. As a newer person to the publishing world, I do my own covers. Maybe someday they will get professionally done.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read a lot of different types of books for pleasure. It depends on what kind of mood I am in at that point. I like mostly romance (not the real mushy romance), action, adventure. I like to read books with morals.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I tried almost everything really. But mainly just advertising on social sites. I have a couple free books, hopefully that will get readers hooked. It's hard when your one person trying to do it all. Editing is the worse.
