Interview with Lisa Stocks

Published 2015-03-17.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My family and the excitement of what each day might bring. Also the excitement I am having about publishing my first book after working on it for three years and the feeling of peace I get knowing I am keeping the memory of my son alive.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
My husband is the adventurous type so if I am not cleaning, cooking or working he is always whisking the family of on some new adventure. Recently we went paddle boarding for the first time. I was reluctant at first but it was quite fun once I learned how to stand and steer without falling off the board.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I mostly like self help or inspirational books.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
My first story was "Wheelies In Heaven? Forever Loving Paul"
What is your writing process?
With my book I just let the words flow from my mind to paper. I wrote everything down that I remembered or that I was thinking and then I rewrote in chronological order of events. Then I filled in blanks here and there as things triggered my memory. Then proof reading, then final copy.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I believe it was "Little Women" by Louisa May Alcott
How do you approach cover design?
Since my book is a non fiction about my son I felt I should use a photograph so my readers could see the characters in the book.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was born in Buffalo, New York. After the Blizzard of '77 my parents moved us to southwest Florida. After the blizzard they figured they had seen enough snow. I attended middle school, high school and college in southwest Florida and am now raising my family here.
What's the story behind your latest book?
It is a story about my son who suffered from Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy which is a birth defect. I started the book with hopes of keeping the memory of him alive and the inspiration that he gave to most everyone who knew him. I also wrote it hoping that it would help other families with someone they love who is suffering from a terminal illness.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
My sons life motivated me to write my book.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
My greatest joy of writing for me is the opportunity to tell in this case, the story of my son and the wonderful things that he accomplished and hopefully my book will help some families that are going through the same situation,
What are you working on next?
I am seriously thinking about starting my autobiography because besides having a son stricken with Duchenne, I had a not so normal young adulthood.
