Interview with Lisa Torquay

Who are your favorite authors?
Well, I have many reading interests, from Salman Rushdie to Lisa Kleypas, including Gabriel Garcia Marques, Tolstoy and Ian MacEwan. As a writer, I think we should be 'plugged' to the literary world in any possible way.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Life. Living is a rare adventure worth looking forward to.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I work as a teacher, I go to the gym and I dance. I spend time with my family very often. Reading, watching BBC films and series also takes up a lot of my time.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Amazon and Smashswords are my main source for prospecting interesting books, either fiction or non-fiction.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Oh, how could I ever forget? I was thirteen and wrote an adventure book placed in India. Unfortunately, I lost it in the house movings I have had.
What is your writing process?
First I get this daydreaming thing about a possible story. If it becomes a real project, I start the researches necessary for it. Then I outline each chapter, that's when I am ready to get down to writing.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I used to read fairy-tales when I was in primary school. My favourite was Sleeping Beauty. I think that the Prince fighting the thorns to reach the Princess marked me indelibly.
How do you approach cover design?
I love the fact that an image gets you dreaming and imagining the couple and their love-story. This is one of the reasons I have favoured more artistic designs.
What is your favorite book, and why?
Surprising as it may be, one of the books I always go back to is Women Who Run with the Wolves from Clarissa Pinkola Estees. It is non-fiction and it traces women and their struggles in daily life so beautifully through old traditional stories. I consider it essential.
What do you read for pleasure?
Definitely romance! I always look for my vacations to pile my tablet with them and get my nose out of the tablet only to eat and sleep. Ok, and to interact with my family too! ;-)
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I consider Kindle a very versatile device.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I am surprised with the feedback I got in Smashswords. Twitter also works very effectively.
Describe your desk
My desk is an organized space with my computer, a coffee cup rest and a pencil case. I discovered that tidiness is the secret to productiveness.
What has most influenced you in your life?
Travelling. My father loves it and he took us, my sister and my mother, too, everywhere. Asia, Australia, North-America, South Africa, Europe, Egypt, you name it. The sounds, the smell, the tastes are things I will carry with me forever.
How do you feel when you write?
Actually, I feel. When I write I am inside the character's mind and heart. Pouring out what they think and sense is mind-blowing!
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book is Claiming His Estranged Viscountess. My friend has a brother who is the life of the party, but he takes nothing seriously. So I imagined him losing someone he would come to value because of that.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
The freedom to vent my creativity.
What do your fans mean to you?
Fans mean a lot, because they motivate me to continue on this road. But the ones who point out my challenges are also welcome. They make me write better.
What are you working on next?
I am outlining a story about a Countess who falls in love with her footman and she does not know he is much more than that.
