Interview with Literary Stud

Published 2014-03-12.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the DFW metroplex, mainly in Dallas. I haven't traveled very far from home so all of my location selections are variations of actual places.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The knowledge that at some point in the day, I will be able to unleash my muse and put pen to paper.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read the classics or mysteries for pleasure. When I first came out, I read a lot of Lesbian romance while I looked for love. Now, I'm not too inclined to read my own genre.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I love my Kindle! It's an older one with keyboard on it. I love the illusion of reading a true hardback with hundreds of books at my fingertips.
Describe your desk
Right now it's a modified computer cart. I removed the slide out keyboard tray because I have a laptop. My dream desk would be L-shaped and dark wood with a hutch.
What is your writing process?
I start of with a rough outline and flesh out my scenes as I go. I do tend to get stuck in the editing process since I'm never satisfied.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I was in elementary school and mysteries have always held a soft spot. I was reading the Perry Mason series by Erle Stanley Gardner and wanted to write my own detective series. Sadly, they were lost in a move but I remember my mother taking me to buy colored folders for each story.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I'm not sure there are too many times I'm not writing since I carry a notebook with me at all times. I do get a few hours of sleep a day and spend time with my fiancee as much as I can. I enjoy watching sports on television. I'm a hometown team fan: Dallas Cowboys, Dallas Mavericks and the Texas Rangers are my favorite teams.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
The traditional publishing houses involve a drawn out process and a project could stall even before it starts. With independent publishing, I can use social media to sell my books and keep most of the profit.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Maxi's Place is a serial story based in Dallas, Texas. With a successful nightclub and restaurant as the background, it provides a view into the hospitality field and the drama that usually occurs. I also wanted to showcase my hometown and the evolving Lesbian community we have.
What are you working on next?
I'm currently working on a web series based on Maxi's Place. It will be filmed Spring 2014 in Dallas, Texas.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Social media has been the most effective marketing technique. I also have a good website with links back to where to purchase my books.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has been a tremendous help with not only providing a publishing platform but also with promotion. I recently participated in Ebook week and sold a lot of copies as well as gained some more exposure.
