Interview with Mony Singh

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in New Delhi, India. From a very young age I had been involved in writing. My dad being a writer who was a winner of few gold and silver medals in literature passed on his writing skills to me. As a growing child I have always been very connected to animals and could not stand cruelty against these beings that are very affectionate and humane by nature and unfortunately have to share this planet with our uncompassionate human species. I was nine years old at the time and my dad took me to a deer park close to my house, I was shocked to see how these animals were mistreated which lead me to write a letter to the editor of "The Statesman" which got published in the paper. That was a start for me.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Some books have to be written with much brainstorming and research. However, White Lies Dark Truth" was bubbling in my mind and I could not take it anymore. The year was 1997; I had to write it to release myself from this pressure. 400 pages were written in just a month and then started the hard task of finding an editor since English language has not been my mother tongue. The first editor I gave manuscript to returned it after 4 days and she was extremely angry at me and furious. She commented that she could not take my words and felt like throwing up. I guess my words were too harsh and it hit her at the precise spots.

1997 through 2000, I could not find anyone to edit my manuscript; some wanted 50% from the profit and some wanted as much as $5000 to edit it. Finally, I started editing the book myself and had to turn the fire down. It took me a year to complete the final version. The started the tough job of finding a literary agent because in those times we did not have "Smashwords". Another year passed by with no success. Finally, I had to beg $10,000 from friends and relatives and signed a contract with "Robert D Reed Publishers". The first hardcover edition got published in November of 2003.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Inner satisfaction and out of the world feeling that you get by expressing your self.
What are you working on next?
At the time when I was writing the book, I was being victimized by strong black magic. Since I had no concept of black magic or it's deadly effects, I never even thought that I am being victimized, even though the universe would send me people and strong signals through the horrible dreams I would go through every night and I should start analyzing my life, as to why myself and my family were going through sheer hell in all areas of life, but I ignored these signals and never looked into it until we were victimized the second time with deadly magic. It was done by a Vietnamese woman who was working for the apartment complex we lived in and she trapped us into believing that she can resolve our issues, we agreed to her healing session and Voodoo witchcraft was initiated on us under the pretext of healing us.
In about 40 days, we started getting strong stinging attacks that started on a dark moon night. That is when I started researching into these issues and came to the realization that we have been victimized with black magic, since this woman was living few apartments away from us, every night became a horror night for us, so much so that we had to dump our stuff and leave the area within 2 weeks. In the coming few months, our physical condition became so pathetic that we had to rush to India, where we stayed for 4+ years and went through many healers, each one of them did their part in saving our lives.
My next book is our real life story (a God given project) and I am looking forward to the day when I will be able to finish it and educate the world on this serious issue that has been ignored by the masses.

What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Spiritual books do not sell unless you coat spirituality with cream and chocolate as many successful authors have done. Just to give you an example. I took a copy of my book to the number one distributors of books in India, he browsed my book for about 15-20 minutes and said you can try on your own but the mankind is not ready for this yet. You will be wasting your time and money. This was year 2004.

I have no regrets that my book does not sell because anyone who has read it their lives have changed and it gives me immense satisfaction when I hear back from people who have read my book.
