Interview with L.N. Chandler

When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I'm not writing, I'm working, spending time with my family, or reading.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
My family and friends make great suggestions to me. I always read based on their recommendations.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes! When my children were little, I always told them a bedtime story--usually one I'd make up as I go. "Lucinda the Ladybug" was one of their favorite characters. When they started asking me to repeat the story, I decided to write it down.
What is your writing process?
Once an idea takes root, I start with an outline. I do research on the place where the story will take place and name my main characters. Once I start writing, the story takes a life of its own. Even though the original plot never changes, the characters tend to write their own story as I go.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
My first love story was "Sweet Sixteen." I read it when I was in fifth grade. The main character's name was Jenny. I loved that book and read it many times. From that point on, I was hooked.
How do you approach cover design?
I think about the story and try to find something that resonates with the main character. For example, there's a lily on the cover page of "You Save Me". The lily is a symbol of peace. That's also one of the things the main character, Lilyana, was seeking. It 's also her favorite flower and part of her name. The cover page not only has to be eye-grabbing, it also has to connect to the story.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Gansett Island Series--I love how the characters flow from book to book. Not only do I get to learn about the main characters, but I
also get to keep up with everyone else on the island.
The Scarlet Letter--Nathaniel Hawthorne was an amazing author. I love the strength Hester Prynne showed throughout the book.
She remained strong regardless of how people treated her.
The Notebook - Best love story of all time.
Harry Potter Series--Magic is always fun! I remember as a little girl watch "Escape from Witch Mountain" and thinking how much
I'd love to have magical powers. Harry Potter is drama, life, death, everlasting friendship, and true love all rolled into one.
Hunger Games Series--These were just a great read. I love Katniss and how she was willing to die to protect her sister. She
fought hard for the ones she loved...and even for the ones she didn't know. Loved her character.
What do you read for pleasure?
Everything. I enjoy romance, suspense, drama, classic literature, any just about any other genre.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I love my Kindle Fire.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Facebook and Twitter have been the most effective for me.
Describe your desk
Believe it or not, it's fairly neat. It's in a back room of my house next to a window. It is surrounded by musical snow globes, books, and pictures.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Shelby, North Carolina. I had the best teachers ever in elementary school. They loved my imagination and always encouraged me. In a small town, you get to know a lot of people and hear of their life experiences. This often provides great material for a book.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy of writing for me is creating my characters, allowing them to grow, and fall in love then sharing them with my readers.
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans mean the world to me. Without them, I couldn't do this.
What are you working on next?
The sequel to "You Save Me" will (hopefully) be out in a couple of weeks. "Because You Love Me" will share the rest of Lilyana and Jaxon's story.
