Interview with Dr Lerrlyn Nelson

When did you first start writing?
I first started writing about thirty years ago.
What's the story behind your latest book?
In 1973, my brother was first diagnosed with Autism at age three. During that time there was very little known about autism. My mother spent years looking and searching for answers. As a family, (extended family included) we did the best we could to help him. We tried to understand his inability to effectively communicate, manage and control his behaviors, and most of all, his need for isolation and repetitive movement. We knew very little about autism and /or what to expect. Like so many other families, it was a trial and error process. We spent many hours, days, weeks, and years advocating for him while trying to understand autism spectrum disorder.

Through my experiences and the knowledge gained over the years, I wrote this book to help others. In a nut shell this book was born out of much love, years of academic study/research, and most of all from working with my brother, my families need to understand autism, and my experience with other families who care and love their child/adult family member diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I was motivated to become an indie author because of the lack of interest in my field of writing. Most publishers were only interested in fiction type writings.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Well I am out there now. Smashwords have given me access to a very broad audience across the world while granting me local access to the market.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy is being able to help others to understand Autism Spectrum Disorder so that the child may be empowered to be more independent, develop social skills, and assist families so that they would not have to face the uncertainties we as a family had to face.
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans mean that one less child with Autism Spectrum Disorder is lost.

My Next project is writing two children books on "Teaching Children about Energy Efficiency" and "How to Preserve Water Quality"
