Interview with Bill Goodrich

What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I want get straight to working on a story as soon as I wake up.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
As a personal trainer, I work out a lot. I also enjoy reading in the science fiction and fantasy genre. Playing darts helps me clarify thoughts on my stories.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I google story types. I look for my favorite authors, and I peruse the Smashwords store.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, and it was not very good. I was in second grade.
What is your writing process?
Sometimes I think of a situation, and create characters for it. Other times I build stories around characters.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
It was Martians go home, written by Fredric Brown, a true master. It made me want to write page turners like it was.
How do you approach cover design?
I conceive a design that conveys a sense of wonder, and commission various artists.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Martians go home, The reassembled man, childhoods End, Enders game, and Saga of the seven suns series. These books have unique concepts, compelling characters, and were extremely well written.
What do you read for pleasure?
Popular science, Popular mechanics, and am working on getting through a bookshelf full of older science fiction paperbacks. I also enjoy the L Ron Hubbard Writers of The Future anthologies, and have them all.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have a first generation Kindle that I am attached to.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
That is still an experiment in progress.
Describe your desk
My writing computer sits in the middle of robot, and fantastic creature figurines. They inspire my creative process.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Lompoc .ca. It did nothing in particular to inspire my writing. Inspiration came from reading others works.
When did you first start writing?
Third grade on.
What's the story behind your latest book?
It is a collection of twenty four different stories, with hints of a shared universe. These are stories that lived in my head most of my life. I finally jumped off the procrastination train, and published EXTRAPOLATOPIA.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Frustration at breaking in through traditional methods.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
By allowing me to "bypass the gatekeepers" to quote Mark Coker.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Creating iconic characters, and fantastic worlds which hopefully capture a fan base, and perhaps ignites that same passion in a new reader.
What do your fans mean to you?
Ha ha. I don't have any yet, but when I do, I will never take them for granted.
What are you working on next?
My second anthology, BLUE VOLTAGE SCIENCE FICTION. I also just completed THE GRID, a post Apocalyptic novel. I am developing an action series using my flagship team, FUSION FORCE. Finally, a fitness book titled GET FIT, I COMMAND YOU.
