Interview with Lois W. Stern

Tell us about your Tales2Inspire series of books.
Each of my Tales2Inspire books is filled with Inspiring Stories so they are somewhat related despite the theme differences.
Right now I have four published books in this series: Tales2Inspire ~ The Emerald Collection, which is a collection of 'Beyond Coincidence' stories,Tales2Inspire ~ The Topaz Collection, a collection of ' Awakenings and Aha Moments' stories, Tales2Inspire ~ The Sapphire Collection, a group of stories that 'Echo In the Mind' and Tales2Inspire ~ The Ruby Collection, stories that give 'Gifts of Compassion' .
Where did you get the idea for these books?
To begin with, I simply enjoy inspirational stories and believe the world needs more of them to counteract all the gloom and doom news we are bombarded with daily. But I also know there are many talented authors out there who never get the recognition they deserve. This has become my personal “Authors Helping Authors” project. I help give my Tales2Inspire winners quite a boost in establishing themselves as authors of talent. And that feels really good!
Could you give us a one-sentence synopsis of your books?
These books are filled with stories of people, and some are even of animals. You will be inspired by how they follow their hearts to better their lives and the lives of others. Sometimes they are models for the rest of us. At other times, we cheer as they reverse damaging patterns in their personal lives to move on to more fulfilling, productive ways of giving and receiving.
Are the Tales2Inspire books similar to any other books on the market today?
That's the easiest question for me to answer, because so many people have said the same thing to me. 'Chicken Soup for the Soul'.
One interviewer went on to say, "But you know something: I like yours even better because each author includes original photographs with their story."
How do you approach cover design?
I have a wonderful graphic artist named Sean Somics, who had been recommended to me by Dan Poynter.. We have never met in person because he lives in Santa Barbara, Ca. and I live on LI, NY. I had a vision for the Winner and Finalist Tales2Inspire logos and that's how we started. We have made that logo the centerpiece for each book cover. It was also my idea to name each book for a gemstone that has a symbolic meaning related to the overall theme of that book. Then I left it up to Sean to work his magic.
I take it that just like 'Chicken Soup for the Soul', the 'Tales2Inspire' books are a compilation of stories written by many different authors. If so, why did you do it that way?
Yes, that's correct. Although I have written a couple of stories for each book, many more of them are written by other authors and aspiring authors.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a small town in Suffolk County, LI. and attended a three room schoolhouse for grades K-7. There were only three teachers there and each one taught two to three grades in their classroom. But some wonderful teaching went on in that building, with powerful life lessons that have served me well for the rest of my life. I write about how some of those experiences helped shape me as a speaker and writer in one of my stories: 'Opossum On My Shoulder', in Tales2Inspire ~ The Topaz Collection.
I notice that you named each of your Tales2Inspire looks for a different gemstone. Is that because you love those jewels?
Well, it's true, I do think those gemstones are exceptionally beautiful and look lovely on the book covers. But I have a far more important reason for those choices. You see I researched the symbolic meaning of various gemstones and matched each one to the theme of that book. For example, the Emerald Collection is filled with 'Beyond Coincidence' stories a perfect match for the gemstone that symbolizes psychic powers.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I like having control over the entire process from content to design, format . . . It's an enormously challenging job with a lot of responsibility and sweat equity involved, but also much joy and satisfaction.
