Interview with R.J. Maxwell

What inspires your books?
That's a tough question. I know most authors probably have a ready answer for that but I don't. The inspiration for my paranormal books comes from real personal life experiences, psychological thrillers are based on recurring dreams with fragments from what I know are past life experiences. If I write poetry or prose it may stem from a moment in life such as a birth, death or loss of some sort, that just sort of brings it to life on paper.
Are you working on a book right now? If so what is it about?
Yes I am working on a psychological thriller that's taken me over a year to write. The next step is reading it like it's not mine, critiquing it like I hate the author, picking on it like my fourth grade english teacher and then picking up the pieces and trying to put it back together like a parent with a kids favorite broken toy. Regarding the second half of your question I can't tell you what it's about, but its my most intense project. This book stems from a recurring dream I've had since childhood.
Who are some of your favorite authors?
I have a wide variety of authors I like but some of my favorites from way back are, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Agatha Christie, Stephen King, Edgar Allan Poe, Charles Dickens, H. G. Wells and Isaac Asimov.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in western NY and spent three years in Pennsylvania at a boarding school just to end up back here again around sixteen years old. The house I grew up in had some "ghostly" activity that would put the shivers on your goosebumps. This area is thick with paranormal investigators and psychics. If you're a western New Yorker, it's in your blood.
How do you approach cover design?
I use only what comes to me in dreams. I know that seems like a lame answer, but I have very intense dreams and I try to use images that best represent what I've seen in those dreams.
Do you have any rituals or superstitions around your writing?
I listen to certain types of music depending on the genre of the book and I can't be interrupted by anything or the writing flow is blocked. I do all of the text work on the computer, but I do the character profiles and timeline on paper so I can reference it or change it as needed. I do sleep with the notebook I use for notes and modifications under my pillow and oddly enough have had some pretty intense ideas from those dreams.
Can you give your fans just five single words that makes you the person you are?
Honest, intense, spiritual, faithful, committed.
How important are your fans to you?
The fans drawn to read my books are parallel souls with the same interests that I have. They are the most important thing, without them I would be writing for myself, what fun is that?
What types of music do you like?
Celtic, Jazz, Rock, R&B, Classical, Chant
What do you do in your spare time?
There doesn't seem to be an excess of spare time in my life, so I read, write, listen to music, work full time, play with my kids and put a constant choke hold on life for a few moments with my wife.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My wife and kids...........let's not forget coffee.

The Weeping Tree is a story about a mystical place in another dimension that the human soul goes when they are depressed, overwhelmed with sadness and need a place of solace to spend time and reflect. We all go off somewhere in our emotional time of need, this is just my version of where the mind or spirit goes. This place is where all my writings come from, my dreams.
