Interview with Lorelei Confer

What are you working on next?
I have two books I've already written regarding human sex trafficking and I'd like to edit them and get them out to my readers. I've had great response for the first three, in fact, one reader created a website and dedicated it to awareness of human trafficking as a result of reading my Deadly series.
Who are your favorite authors?
For the suspense genre, I love Harlan Coben. I've read most of his books and although not romance the thriller part of it, so well written, and so intriguing. It's hard to put down a book once started. Of the romance genre, I grew up reading Kathleen Woodikiss, Rosemary Rogers, Johanna Lindsey, Diana Palmer, BJ Daniels, just to name a few, and continue to read them all.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, surprisingly enough. I was in the fourth grade and an assignment to write a story about something you or anyone would fear. I wrote a short story about going to the doctor and getting a shot. My teacher liked it so much it was made into a play using classmates as characters and preformed in front of all the invited parents and other classes. It was also the beginning of journaling everyday, which now is a collection of great fodder for my stories.
What is your writing process?
Usually, I have a plot idea and mull it around for awhile. The characters may only have one characteristic when I actually start to write but I have some of the plot sorted out. I jot down all my thoughts and ideas pertaining to the story and then go back and expound on each of the characters and the events. As I continue to write I obviously get to know the characters very well and I let them drive the plot further. Since I prefer suspense most times I have that part of the plot already figured out and continue to write layer upon layer as my characters develop into heroes, heroines and villains.
How do you approach cover design?
Since I know the story and the characters I like to choose pictures similar to the places and people within the story. In my series I like to make sure the background a commonality in all of them and usually the font as well.
What do you read for pleasure?
Primarily, I read what I write; romantic suspense. I do make an exception, quite often actually, to read thrillers written by Harlan Coben, Andrew Gross, James Patterson, etc.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I ahem a small iPad that is perfect for reading anywhere and I usually have it with me everywhere.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Social media is the bomb! A few tweets and posts a day goes a long way. Blog tours are fun to do if you're with the right bloggers for your genre and book signings are a great way to spread your name far and near.
Describe your desk
IT. IS. MESSY. I'm a visual person so I need my research and character sketches written down to refer to frequently. I use 3x5 note cards (I use a new set for each book) and once I have a characteristic develop I make a note on the card. So on one card I have name, age, hair color, eye color, parents and sibling info, height, weight, etc. Kind of like a storyboard but with characters. The plot continues to develop on its own.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the rural hills of central Pennsylvania. I had the great outdoors available to me to explore throughout every season. Suspense developed when the wind whistled through the trees or large and small creatures rustled in the brush. Love and romance grew when I met my knight in shining armor in high school many years ago (too many to count) and our relationship blossomed and bloomed into a great bond. It's been many years since I wrote newsy love letters to him in Viet Nam, which in fact encouraged me to continue writing and journaling long after we were married.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book in the Saddle Creek series is a military romance of sorts. The hero, Dillon Davidson, can't find a satisfying job or career in the small rural town of Saddle Creek, outside Jackson Hole, Wyoming in the shadows of the Grand Teton mountains. After struggling for years he decides to join the military to become 'somebody and return with skills.'

The love of his life, Avri, is devastated when he doesn't leave her his address and doesn't keep in touch with her or any of his friends the entire time he's gone. She feels deceived.

After being gone for four long lonely years he returns a different man; he had to kill too many people and he has secrets he can't share. He wants a fresh start, especially with Avri. But he finds her with another man. Dillon comes to the realization that life for his friends and sweetheart went on without him and their relationships will never be the same.

Dillon and Avri both have to overcome a number of obstacles, including murder, if they want to salvage their relationship. But they both fear there may be too many years apart, too many secrets, and too many deceptions. Can they do it?
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I liked the idea of being able to decide myself when my book was released and how much it cost. Even the input on the cover is in my control, as well as all the marketing, which I had to do anyway with a traditional publisher.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords is a great avenue to get your books to Barnes and Noble, iBooks, Kobo, etc. They really get your book in spots you never realized were available. Sales are the results.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Getting all my angst and emotion out on the page and letting a character run with it. It's so interesting to see what someone else (the character) will do with it.
