Interview with L.A.A. Law

What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My three wonderful children inspire me to get out of bed each morning. Their willingness to help in this endeavor and to make the hard choices inspire me and give me hope. Despite facing challenges, they rise to the occassion and assist when they can. Seeing this encourages me to continue in hopes that in some small way we can assist in the greater picture.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
In addition to my job which takes most of my time, I am very active in my childrens' schools and assisting them in carrying on their extra-curricular activities and school work/volunteer activities since they are not yet of driving age and can make long distrance committments.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Ebooks is truly a new thing for me and discovering them on the internet has truly been an experience. I was always one for going to Barnes and Noble and picking out the books which appeared to be interesting from the shelf or going there based upon a recommendation. Now, I search through google, smashwords and amazon for interesting titles, It is quite and experience.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
The first story I ever wrote was ages ago. It was also the only other story I ever wrote and was a short story for a school project in the same paranormal genre that I am engaged in at present. However, considering the school I was at during this project, I remember how the topic was not truly appreciated.
What is your writing process?
My writing process was born from extenuating circumstances in our life at the time. I sat at the computer in hopes of utilizing it, as a client suggested, for an outlet to cope with difficult time and the first of the series presently on Smashwords was born. As the difficulty continued, so did the writing. Thereafter, it was put away for a while, revisited, edited by certain individuals and then went on to a testing group and based upon that group, certain aspects were re-written again in order to provide satisfaction into what we hoped would grow into a reader base.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first story I ever read was given to me as a young child, The Little Engine That Could. My family was going through a difficult time with grandparents who were very ill and my parents wanted me to read something that was encouraging and set forth that one could do whatever they set their mind to with determination. That story stayed with me and I hope that I passed it on to my own children.
How do you approach cover design?
Cover design comes from considerable family participation. Our covers may not be as sophisticated at those professionally done, but they give my children a sense of accomplishment since it is a compilation of their pictures that make it to the cover and their assitance in designing them. Although they may not be as eye catching or complicated as others which are magnificently set forth and I must say, in some cases, dazzling, my goal in this process is to show my children that something good can come out of the experience we went through, and hopefully this helps to accomplish that.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Guess How Much I Love You, although it is a childrens short story is my absolute favorite book because I read it to my own children who loved the book growing up and still love it today and have taken from it how much I love them. My favorite line from the book is how the author sets forth that the older rabbit loves their child "right up to the moon and back." That is my favorite line of all times. I also loved the Devil's Advocate and Milton's Dante's Inferno because I love the concepts of the paranormal causing havoc in our lives here and taking advantages of our weakness and the concept of hell with it's many levels. Finally, I love the compilation of short stories written by Edgar Allen Poe and the mysteries of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes. Mr. Poe's guilt ridden characters and the dark stories are engaging, while the deductive reasoning in the Sherlock Holmes stories have always kept my interest.
What do you read for pleasure?
I love romance and paranormal romance books that I am finding on line. I also enjoy mystery and dark stories of revenge. Since discovering how many books are on the internet from indie authoris, I have been veering more towards them at the present because I find it very interesting to see how many stories are written by individuals who do not do this for a living, but do this to get stories out that they are passionate about. They are amazing and it has been very inspiring.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
At the present time it is my laptop, however, ocassionally now that my children have ipods and ipads I have read a few items on their devices when I can rip them from their hands (just joking - it is usually late in the evening after they retire).
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Being so new to this, I am not quite sure what is working. At the present, I am trying to get it out into the internet universe using suggested google sites for posting free books or free sites for posting books. I hope that I am doing it correctly, because I truly believe in the charity we chose for the first book to have people donate to, it is an extremely important and wonderful cause and the school that we will be donating the net proceeds to from book two in the series is so amazing, I see how it has done wonders for children there, children who have otherwise faced bullying situations in former schools, who are not always athletes, and who need a place where they too belong. I find the school to be astounding and hope that we can donate some money to help them out in a time when economically schools are facing challenges.
Describe your desk
My desk used to be in our home office, it had our desktop computer and a place for my notes and several files for clients I was working on at the time. Now, even though I still have that desk, it has my children's x-box, their computer and folders for school work and projects. At present, I prefer writing on my laptop or transcribing notes on a table in our living room, sitting on a comfortable couch.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The story behind the latest book is a continuation of the Sanctuary Hospital Series - Nighmare of the Dark Shadows and takes the reader ahead several years where Mia and Andrew's children are older and find themselves in danger. As they encounter this new threat, powers are quickly revealed, the hindrance of self-doubt in Mia's life continues to hamper her, but her determination, devotion, and drive to save her children force her to rise above it all. The story introduces new paranormal characters and culminates in a surprising twist to pay off a self-sacrificing move that is alluded to earlier in this series.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
The idea that I could show my family that even when things seem difficult and sitautions turn you in a direction that you never expected, good things can come from it without resorting to methods which could harm yourself or your family or bring you down your own dark path. The idea of using this series to do something good and have something good come from it is was led to the publishing of the books that were written.
