Interview with Lorraine Miller

When did you first start writing?
As an introverted child, much of my time was spent within. I began writing short poems and reflections as a teenager. During my years in business, I found I was quite organized in letter writing and my bosses came to rely on me to handle their correspondence. I became prolific in outlining coherent public relations responses to complex situations, which greatly assisted me when writing my book. When I began my metaphysical studies, I did much research and took copious notes, having no idea where it would lead me. Then, viola, when the astrological influences were impossible to ignore, I sat down and began my memoir, The Tapestry of Grace: Crafted by The Divine Weaver.
What is your writing process?
I have an internal process where I have to mull things over in my mind before I am able to reflect my thoughts to paper. As a spiritual writer, I find I cannot write when I am not in a spiritual place. Once I have felt my thoughts, I then contemplate them. Once I own them, then I am able to convey them from a higher level of compassionate understanding without the negative feedback my mind sometimes gives me.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
No, but as a child growing up in a very dysfunctional family, books were my refuge! I was a prolific reader and my favorite day was library day. The smell of the books excited me and I couldn't wait for my next adventures to begin.
What do you read for pleasure?
I am a very big fan of historical fiction based on true events. I enjoy reading books that further my search for truth while entertaining me.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up on Long Island, New York, but we also spent a few years in Nevada. As a child, my small town was not much more than potato fields, with a small school. In fact, my class was the first to graduate from our high school. My first job was working for the principal at the elementary school, who was my former fifth grade teacher. When I was 21, I began working for an international airline carrier, which greatly expanded my world view. However, I was always a small-town girl in my heart and longed for the peace of nature, which led me to Arizona. All that I learned along the way influenced how I looked at the world, my relationships with people from all over the world helped me see how we are all interconnected, and those experiences influenced my perceptions and writing.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Since my views are quite different from many of the traditional publishers, I did not want anyone to make decisions regarding what I considered valid viewpoints and experiences. When I met Peter Klein, we were of like minds, and he became my editor. With his experience and help, we independently published my books and e-books.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords is a great venue for an independent author and publisher, giving us exposure that we would not ordinarily have on our own accord.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
My greatest joy is when I can convey my observances of life from a more spiritual outlook which can give hope and inspiration to others.
What do your fans mean to you?
It is so rewarding when I get feedback from someone who has been touched by my life experience and especially if it has helped give them some understanding to apply to their own circumstances. I have never been motivated by anything other than a love for others and the desire to give of my own soul to those who are spiritually seeking for answers.
Who are your favorite authors?
My favorite authors currently are Kathleen McGowan and James Rollins.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My inspiration nowadays comes from my volunteer work at the local humane society where I am an adoption counselor. I spend much of my time in the cat room, since they need advocates who understand them. I love to match the cat to the right home and find the right cat for someone who's looking for one. When we're not too busy, I love working with the cats who need some TLC and help adjusting to the changes they are experiencing to make them more adoptable. Then I have my own brood of two dogs which require twice-daily walks and three cats. My Mastiff/Golden Retriever, Mandy, is a certified therapy dog through my shelter, and she especially loves visiting with children.
