Interview with Anna Patterson

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Texas basically, but moved to Arkansas in the Ninth grade. I have been in Arkansas since then. I think living in both places has given me a deep rooted love for Western things, including writing, and Southern things, such as quilt making, doll making, and cooking. I also feel the Southern culture has enriched my love of music and folk tales and legends.
When did you first start writing?
I really did write my first book, "Little Apple Tree with his Mother", never published of course, when I was quite small. I drew the illustrations on the back of paper bags until my parents finally bought me my first tablet to write and draw in.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I think all of my books show an interest of mine, and something I start out being curious about. What if? That still intrigues me, and makes me write what I do.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I had been considering this for some time. I was most influenced by other writers who jumped in to this before I did, and shared their wonderful experiences with me.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I think it has taught me much about putting a book together. Who will ever forget Mark Coker's books on this. I enjoyed reading them and trying to get my writing into the right form for a book.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I like the idea of sharing with people. Writing has always been something I was lucky enough to share, in writing for newspapers, in published poetry, even in writing songs. It is a joy to share thoughts, ideas, and ways of thinking. I love to read to and still read so many things.
What do your fans mean to you?
I am still new to this concept, to me my friend base has just gotten much larger, that is for sure. So I am thankful to God for that.
What are you working on next?
I have several projects in the works.
Who are your favorite authors?
I have read Harlequin Romance for so many years, I don't know how many. I still read these, avidly. But I like science fiction and even horror.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Every day is a new beginning for the rest of your life. I heard that somewhere, and it stuck with me. I am a morning optimist for sure. But it takes coffee for me to keep that going.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Cooking, watching old movies, reading, and painting. My husband, Bill, and I share many interests and we always have something which intrigues us.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Actually friends on the social media sometimes recommend some, and I look these over. I get newsletters from authors, and look over this also.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
We moved several times when I was attending school. At each school a teacher would ask students to write a small story about themselves. I memorized this, and wrote the same one each time. So I do remember that!
What is your writing process?
I have no process, unfortunately, I write when I feel like it, which is a lot of the time.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I read the Bible and Shakespeare when I was young, and I also liked the Little Golden Books.
How do you approach cover design?
I consider cover artists for this now.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
I am not sure right now, this has changed so much lately.
What do you read for pleasure?
Old classics and romances
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My computer on my desk.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I think the Internet is a good place for this. I have a web page also.
Describe your desk
Layered, definitely layered.
Write your own question here! Writers block
II know a lot of people talk about writers block, but I have never seen this. I think the more I write, the more I find to write.
Write your own question here! Do I believe the markets are saturated with books
No, I don't. I think there is so much interest in books now, more than I have ever seen before.
