Interview with Lucien Romano

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Nowhere, because I've never really grown up. However, this lack of adulthood has been a positive influence on my writing, because it hasn't become jaded as I've gotten older.
When did you first start writing?
While I was at school, but I never had the persistence then to finish more than short stories.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Today's turbulent world is the inspiration for the Starbound series, except that as it's alternative history, the timeline diverges from reality in the first novel, Exit Strategy
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Buying a tablet computer in 2013 and discovering how easy it is to self-publish. I already had one novel (Headlong) written and *all* it required was proper editing, proof reading and a suitable cover design. Fortunately, I have mates with that expertise.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
It hasn't yet, but I have high hopes!
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
When writing, it would be seeing an idea take shape as a narrative that works. From readers, it's receiving feedback, especially when they post a review. It's nice to get positive reviews, but I have learned useful things to improve my writing from a negative one.
What do your fans mean to you?
A responsibility. If they've enjoyed what they've read so far, it motivates me to keep them happy with new work of an equal or better standard.
What are you working on next?
Plan B, which is volume 3 of Starbound, after Exit Strategy and Headlong. There will also be a volume 4, working title Plan C.
Who are your favorite authors?
Favourite or most influential? Hmm, in no particular order and mixing the two categories: Pirsig, Dostoyevsky, Heller, Lem, Brunner, Wells, Asimov, Silverberg, Heinlein, Plath. There are more, but that'll do for now.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
A good strong pot of Assam, usually.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Thinking about writing, either bashing existing ideas into shape or observing the world around me for new ones.
