Interview with Nigel Cobbett

What motivated you to become an indie author?
Boredom and a desire to achieve the task. Had I realised how long it would take and how tough the marketing is afterwards, I may never have started!
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I began by setting up my own website, even learning HTML. The site even had a forum in an effort to promote the book. Smashwords taught me to learn how to format the book properly and more professionally. The marketing side also I learned from Smashwords. So Smashwords provided a disciplined structure for all the elements required when writing and promoting the book.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Achievement in seeing the book offered for sale in all the most important places - Apple, Kobo, Barnes & Noble etc. Amazing to see it on those famous websites. I used to visit the sites almost every hour just to see it there. Also I now have an abiding daily interest in monitoring the various elements in promoting the book. Like a mother with her first baby.
Who are your favorite authors?
All top sellers, whoever they are. I realise how much work went into their stellar achievments.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My wife and my book. In that order. My new smart phone is crammed full with both of them!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Promoting and thinking about other ways to promote the book! I have just completed a Youtube collection of videos which are on my profile page now, for example.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
To my shame, I hardly ever read! The last time I really read a book earnestly was when I was 18, when hitching in France. It was "The Lord of the Rings". My mate used to get annoyed with me because he did all the thumbing for lifts, while I sat on my knapsack on the side of the road with my head buried in that amazing story.
What is your writing process?
Quickly scribbling fresh thoughts on scraps of paper in case the inspiration and memory is lost for ever! Then collecting the scraps together to type them onto the first draft using Word. Then copy and pasting the new stuff into the growing book. Finally reviewing the formatting and other important end stuff.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Treasure Island! Full of excitement, fear, action, swarthy evil men, great story line. Engrossing!
How do you approach cover design?
Smashwords give great advice. The impact of the cover on the sales of the example described by Mark Coker was dramatic. I tried my best to make it professional looking and eye catching! I looked at many different ideas and chose one which I thought was appropriate. Had MC not stressed the importance of a good cover, I would have got the book on the market much sooner! I am glad I gave it the time and effort it needs.
