Interview with Luke Hutchinson

What's the story behind your latest book?
Shaping the Church is my research paper for my final year at bible college. BUT essentially it is my reflection on the condition of the church in Britain. I love the church and I am learning so much about what Jesus wants for His bride. I certainly do not have any answers - but from seeing how the personality of the church has changed over centuries and how it is expressed around the world... I thought I would share my thoughts.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
My greatest joy is hearing back from someone who has enjoyed what they have read. My aim for anything in life is to help change someone's life. If my small ebook can help just one person, then is has achieved its task.
What do you read for pleasure?
I really enjoy reading biographies and autobiographies of Christian missionaries and people who have lived an adventure. I often find them encouraging and it helps give me perspective in life.
I also take delight in reading motivational books from authors who have experienced a lot in life. Such as Nick Vijicic, or Dude Perfect.
If I need something more applicable, I often choose to read spiritual or inspiring books about the Christian life. In this areas of topic, I prefer to choose more modern ones.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I really like my Kindle e-reader. I am not experienced with other e-readers, but since Amazon is one of the main founders in this industry, I trust theirs is one of the most advanced. I find I can get most books on Amazon and if not, you can convert it online anyway!
What are you working on next?
I would like to write something else. Perhaps another bite-size type of ebook (10,000 words?), but I will need some fresh vision first. This first ebook was very demanding to finish... I hope if I write something else there would be more flexibility. I would also like to write something that is more personal and more applicable to someone's life. It will most likely be about the Christian life!
One idea I had was to write around the topic, "We Don't Need God." The attitude of today. My aim would be to show, demonstrate and convince the reader that they do need God!!
Describe your desk
I write in different places. At the time of writing the bite-size ebook, I had a small bedroom at a bible college, so I often chose to sit in the library so I could look out of the window watching the rabbits and the seasons change. A good view for writing is important!
How do you approach cover design?
I used fiverr.com and found a suitable person to design the cover. I wanted something really plain but attractive so it could be read as a thumbnail but also professional when in full size. Paying someone $5/$10 is definitely worth it.
Contact me if you would like to know who I specifically used.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Doncaster, (North England) and spent my early adulthood in Plymouth (South England). Leaving home at 17 years old encouraged my independence and spiritual growth. Joining a youth group and sharing life with young Christian friends influenced me a lot! I travelled overseas to Mexico, Italy, Senegal, South Korea, New Zealand, Germany, Netherlands... visiting churches and partaking in short term mission, whilst also studying at a bible college. Seeing a vast number of cultures, countries and churches has influenced my writing.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I remind myself each day that life is not about me but it's about Jesus. I ask God each day that He would use me to change someone else's life.
When did you first start writing?
For my first ebook, Shaping the Church, I began in January 2014 and it was published in June. I typed the main parts within one week when the other students had taken holiday, I decided to concentrate on this piece of work. So it did not take 6 months to write, but that period of time helped me to reflect on ideas I have written and they matured over time. I am glad I gave myself this period of time before publishing.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I like to socialise with friends, drink coffee in the morning, watch sunsets, play sports and try something dangerous most days. If I'm feeling introverted I will read, or waste hours watching random videos. I enjoy staying in touch with friends around the world and I like to spend time with Jesus on my own. I try to live life excited... Jesus came to so we may have life in abundance!
