Interview with Mari Ann Caudill

How do you approach cover design?
I use Daz Studio 3D for all of my book covers. I am grateful for the wonderful artist in the Daz Studio community who provide art to the digital word. I have designed covers before I have started writing. However, I normally wait until the story is completed to design the cover as well as the choosing a title.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I wrote my first novel in high school, which remains unpublished (Razor). I have reviewed the novel several times to attempt to modify it but time seems to get away from me. At this time, I am unsure if I will ever publish the novel.
Who are your favorite authors?
I do not have a favorite author, but most of the books I have in my collection are from Dean Koontz, John Saul and Lisa Jackson.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
I enjoy rending the Odd Thomas and Frankenstein series by Dean Koontz. I also like the Rick Bentz and Reuben Montoya characters from the New Orleans book series by Lisa Jackson. Taking the journey with the character into their world in the pages of a book is intriguing. I have not finished all of the books in each series but I have most of them in my collection.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My first e-reading device was a nextbook. I recently started using my LG Tablet since it has a larger screen for my reading.
Describe your desk
My desk is an antique library table. I don't know how old it is but its an heirloom in my family going back at least four generations. Its the perfect length, width and height for me.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
The motivation to become an indie author is based on my entrepreneurship. I love the flexibility of being your own boss. I enjoy writing and bringing your work to others is a wonderful feeling. There are challenges of being an indie author. Ensuring you have a good proofreader, great marketing skills, good turnaround on new books, great cover and many more challenges.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
There are so many self-publishing options available. Smashwords provides great resource to indie authors, such as a variety of platforms available, Smashwords Style Guide, tips on marketing, etc.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy of writing is being able to create a story that can engulf you into a world of imagination.
What are you working on next?
I am working on revising a novel in a fantasy series. I have enjoyed working on the novel and designing the characters that hopefully my readers will love. I hope my readers will enjoy the journey with each character as they face challenges, find love, lose faith, connect with new friends, and fight for their lives. I look forward to receiving feedback on a teaser of a few chapters before my novel is released. I will post further details on social media when the chapters will be available.
