Interview with Christopher D Votey

When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Some aspect of my life is always related to writing. Outside of writing I am taking a break by walking, doing chores, or playing video games.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I wrote what I now know as Fan Fiction when I was 10 that was the premise of Star Trek with children as a central focus. I wrote that I was transported to the Star Trek universe (or rather kidnapped and taken to the future) and through a series of interesting circumstances, became a captain of my own starship.
What is your writing process?
I don't do a whole lot detailed planning. I spend a month or more thinking about the rules of any universe and events I would like to see. I then build character profiles and general setting in the universe and have the first 3 - 5 chapters sort of planned out with no real concept of how the story ends. I then open up Notepad on my computer and write. I prefer notepad as Microsoft Word and Scrinever are too distracting for me. Then I just write with very little editing until I complete the story, then in second draft go back and edit it and often add more to the story that I missed my first time round.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
For Kindle books (and for testing), I have a Kindle Paperwhite.

For other formats, I have a unique device called a Pocket EDGE. It is a hybrid eReader and Tablet in the style of a book. I open it up to see two screens, one of each type. It's a device that requires modification and runs on Android. The company that made it is now defunct.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing at the age of 10. I had no real reason to start, just seemed like the right thing for me to do.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The idea of this story came to me many years ago, but the original story was much different. The first chapter was basically the first book of the series, then took place 500 years in the future. However, this presented a lot of logistical problems, so I decided to focus on just the beginning, which ended up evolving to the current story.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
While I may opt for traditional publishing one day, I knew that the things I wanted to write about may not have been of interest to publishers as they might have found trouble marketing it. While I face that same trouble, I am hesitant to make changes to my story for marketability, I have a story to tell and I want it to be told my way.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
My characters surprising me. I often don't know what will happen next and sometimes my characters do something I didn't expect and it surprises me.
What are you working on next?
My book, Templar Five was written as one long story, almost like Lord of the Rings (but not that long). To try to keep good pacing in the story, I am dividing it into 5 parts. The first part serves more as a prologue, but is 5 chapters long. The next book will be the core book, and then release either 2 or 3 additional books that take place between some of the chapters, that will enhance the universe, but won't be required to read book 2, which may also have extra books released with it.
What do your fans mean to you?
Fans are the reason I write. while I tell stories for myself in my head, and put it on paper, it is their approval I seek. I want to know the stories in my head and heart affect them the same way and if I fail, I want to know how I did to make it better next time.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The idea that I can make my life somewhat normal again. With my disability, even getting out of bed is difficult, especially if I spent the night before working hard on my book. However, the more I work on my stories, the closer I come to trying to make a life as an author, and maybe get back what my disability stole from me.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I am always trying new techniques, but I find the most successful one is searching for people to give me an honest review of my book, and mentioning it on twitter. Every two weeks, I post tweets a few times throughout a day, up to 3 days a week, about various articles I have and books I've written. The danger here is doing it too much to where people feel you are spamming their timelines.
