Interview with Maggie Adams

How do you approach cover design?
With a whip and a chair!! No, really, I have an idea in mind and I'm lucky that my editor's company also does cover design. I tell her what I want or send a photo idea and she runs with it! I do try to NOT put faces on my covers. The reader develops an idea of how he/she wants the main characters to look and that adds to their overall satisfaction with the novel experience. In most cases, my covers represent a scene or some symbolism within the book.
What do you read for pleasure?
Anything and Everything! I am an extremely curious person, so I may read a romance about BDSM one day, then read a nonfiction on how to play the guitar the next day. I love the fact that the romance genre has exploded with variations on the theme. Paranormal, comedy, dark, erotic, MC, billionaires, etc. Then we add all the self-published other genres and it's a cornucopia of treats for a bibliophile like me!
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
By the time I was eighteen, I had lived in fourteen different places within a one hundred mile radius. My father couldn't keep a job; my mother was an epileptic with bi-polar syndrome. They divorced when I was twelve and I was left to raise my two younger brothers, as both parents withdrew into their own misery. I read books to withdraw into my own fantasy world when things got too hard. My writing style is straight forward and humorous, maybe because my childhood wasn't. I don't know. But I always make my heroine strong and capable. My heroes are tough, noble, responsible men who love children. So, yes, I guess my childhood reflects in my writing.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My debut series is called Tempered Steel. It's about a family with seven brothers, trying to rebuild their town after a devastating flood. Each brother finds his soul mate while trying to catch vandals, arsonists, and murderers determined to wreck their efforts. It's set in Grafton, Illinois, where an actual flood did decimate the town in 1993. I lived in Grafton when I was first married so it was particularly heartbreaking to see what happened to the town. But it was amazingly gratifying to note how the community solidified and made their town bigger and better than it ever had been. That's what I wanted to recapture in my series. It's a contemporary romance series with undertones of suspense and erotica.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
My greatest joy is when I can sit back and look at a scene and say, "Yep. That's it. That's exactly what I wanted to say or convey." It's my greatest joy because it's so rare. I think all authors are that way to a certain extent. Just when you think you've got it right and it's out there in the world, you think of something you could have or should have said, or another scene to emphasize a point.
That's why I wanted to do a series. Now, I can add a little bit to the other characters from the previous books and keep the reader up to date on what's going on in their lives while I develop the storyline for the new characters.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing a journal or diary when I was seven. My homelife was in turmoil and I needed a way to get out the anger, the fear and the frustration.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
177 rejections by publishing houses! I read and reread my first novel, Whistlin' Dixie, and I couldn't figure out WHY they didn't want it. It had romance, suspense, humor, steamy sex scenes. The only thing it didn't have was a mysterious billionaire or a vampire! So I put it away for years, until my son insisted I try self publishing. He set me up with KDP on Amazon and we worked on it together until I was ready to press that "Publish" button!
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything!!! I was so caught up in the publishing process, I never gave a thought to the "after". The first day it was available, I got comments and reviews. I didn't even try to market it - it just seemed to take on a life of it's own. Then, when I heard from bloggers and editorial revewers, I knew I had to get it out to the masses. And boy, my fans didn't let me down! Before I knew it, I had a twitter account, a FB fan page, Goodreads followers, and Instagram and Pinterest links. They supported me and cheered me and sometimes pushed me into marketing and I couldn't be more grateful.
What are you working on next?
I'm still working on the Tempered Steel series because the fans want to know more about the Coalson family friends and neighbors. Spinoffs are definitely on my to-do list. I also have several ideas for an erotic romance series featuring 'beautiful women of a certain age" because, let's face it, sex doesn't end when you hit 40! I also have a paranormal trilogy that is itching to be put into words.
Who are your favorite authors?
My first ws Kathleen Woodiwiss. She introduced me to historical romance. From there, I found Amanda Quick, Julie Garwood, and Julia Quinn. Then it was a quick move to Nora Roberts, Cali MacKay and Shayla Black. Now, my must reads are Lexi Blake, Sophie Oak, Cali MacKay, and Molly MacAdams.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My job for the past twenty years - I own an in-home daycare. I definitely cannot let my little angels loose in the house while I rest in bed! Until I retire from this, which my husband says I can after I sell 100,000 books, so any help there would be appreciated, I'm still Miss Maggie and I'm up at 5:30 am so I'm dressed when kids arrive at 6:30.
