Interview with Ashlynn Elliott

How do you approach cover design?
Paint on my mom's old computer. I used to not have book covers, but a few weeks ago I was messing around on the computer and I found a way to get a cover. They're not the best, though. As the old saying goes, please do not judge my books by the covers!
Describe your desk.
One Chromebook laptop, and um, 3 month's worth of trash, pictures, leftover Halloween candy, stuff to keep track of my books, me?
What do you read for pleasure?
I read fantasy books. My favorite categories are fairies, mermaids, magic, and talking animals!
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book is the first installment in my new series, Sparkle. It is called "The Other Side." Barbara Wilson is a third grader who's life is rough. No one exactly likes her. She's the prime spot for bullies. And what's worse, everyone is keeping secrets from her, including her parents. There's a fence in her back yard, and she's not allowed to see what's behind it, and any time she mentions it, her dad freaks out. There's something back there, and Barbara knows it. But what is it?
When did you first start writing?
I first started writing when I was about four. Back then, my brother liked trains, so I made a story about trains. It was a fictional story, and it was very odd, since it was based off of a dream I had.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Well, when I was in third grade, There was some boys in my group, writing books about zombies (it kinda freaked me out!!!!). They were showing off their books to everybody. I wanted to do that. I wrote a book about my favorite show, Winx Club, with me and my friends in it. I had written a series of 15 books, then I lost it. That encouraged me to write the books, BeanZ, which is on Smashwords. I told everybody when I finished it. My local library showed me how to publish on Smashwords, and I was completely interested!
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I like it because I'm writing about stories that make me laugh, and the stories that I like to read!
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans mean that people enjoy my writing, and it means the most me!
What are you working on next?
I am currently working on a middle school story. It's my first book to not have a bit of fantasy in it; I wanted to try out a more realistic story. In a small middle school in Texas, there are six different girls, with six different personalities, all with their own problems. Kathy and her sister Merleah just moved in, but their luggage has disappeared. Now they both miss home more than ever. Hanna and Melissa, the twins, are already fed up with their many brothers and sisters, find out that their mom is pregnant again. Lynn and her older sister Francine are both worried to death. Their dad lost their job and they might be moving! As they all become friends, they might just help each other with their struggles.
Who are your favorite authors?
Some of my all time favorite authors are Barbra Park ( Author of Ramona and Beezus), Nick Bruel(Author of Bad Kitty), and Beverly Cleary(Author of Junie B. Jones). Some of my favorite authors on Smashwords are Angela Hope, Leslie Lee, Jeffie Dee Brown Duncan, Teri Kanefield, Rosemary J. Peel, and Shelley Admont.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The fact that you are never to young or old to do anything inspires me!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I am usually playing with my beanie babies, playing with my friends, or playing my piano.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes. It was titleless, but it was about a girl finding magic wheels that turn people into trains! (I was 4, okay?!)
What are your five favorite books, and why?
My five favorite books would have to be Bad kitty, Fairy Wings, Eye of the Storm, Winx Club: Fire and Ice, and.... um..... do my books count? :)
What is your writing process?
Write, Type, Proofread, Publish. It's really short, I know, and it doesn't take long either! My dad and Grandpa do the proofreading.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Yes.... It was a children's book about Dumbo the Elephant on shapes. I was in Pre-K. Well, it was the first book I read by myself.....
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Computer. That's the only thing I have. For crying out loud, I'm only eleven!
What are your future books planned?
My next three books will be Fashion Show, Part-Time Fairy, and Sisters and Secrets.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I'm still growing up!!!!! I live in a small town in SWLA. Most of my books are based off of my interests. I love fantasy and toys. I am a girlie girl and I live with my mom, dad, 6-year-old brother, 3-year old sister, and my dog Maggie. Some of my stories are based off of games I play with my friends, such as The Adventures of Charlotte and Bloom, Those DANG Chihuahuas, and to be coming soon, When life gives you lemons, Twin Legends, Sisters and Secrets, and many more! I am actually playing a game now, and I don't know what I'll call the book!!
What is your latest poem about?
My latest poem is about April, a husky who likes to read, starting a book club. When a party comes around, she must find a substitute to lead the club. But the substitute lies and goes to the party instead. Will her club be ruined?
What is your series, BeanZ, about?
BeanZ is a series about a girl named Ashlynn who goes on many adventures with her talking toys. Each toy is different in its own way, and they must each solve a problem by learning to behave, believe in themselves, etc. So far, there are three books in the series. The first is called BeanZ, which Ashlynn finds out the secret about the animals by a bull dog toy named Huggins, and Huggins must do what he does best to escape people who don't like him for who he is. Book two is called New Cat in Town, in which Ashlynn and Huggins get another talking animal for Easter, and this one lets out a secret, and if Ashlynn and Huggins can't learn to keep it, there will be chaos! Finally, the last book is about a very bad dog named Frank, who had a very rough childhood, and must learn to share his feelings with others. The series is based of my love for beanie babies.
What is your series, The Adventures of Charlotte and Bloom, about?
The Adventures of Charlotte and Bloom is about a two very unique girls who both have super powers. They have to learn more things about the powers, while facing the challenges of being a middle school-er. They also meet several other super-powered girls along their adventures, as well as a mean girl named Elsie, and their crazy siblings and cousins. So far there is only one book in the series, which is where they discover the powers and have to face reality. The series is based off of a game I played with a girl named Ally in her inground pool.
What is your series, Awesome Magic Secret Stories, about?
Well, it says it in the name! They are STORIES, about different girls with different lives, who find out a SECRET about MAGIC and the whole thing is AWESOME!!!! So far, there is only one story in the series, which is Those DANG Chihuahuas. The story is about Cindy and her sisters, Skylar and Belle, who find some wacky dogs, and find out some crazy secrets about them. Turns out that they are not only fairies in disguise, but their lost sisters and brother, too! Cindy must learn to face reality before everything goes wrong. The series is based of games I play with all of my friends.
What is the series, Cat and Dog Short Stories, about?
Cat and Dog Short Stories is about four dogs and four cats with different personalities that go on several adventures. As the series goes on, they all get older, and soon, the eight meet up. They are all poems, and I publish one with each full book I write. So far, there are three in the series, but I am sure there will be several more. The first one is called Cat-astrophe, which is about four cats, Pip and Sara, who don't exactly like each other, but end up being friends, along with two other cats, Nip and Bounce, in the end. Dog Days is about four dogs named Henry, Sam, Carmella, and April entered in an ice-cream selling contest. Finally, Toothache is when Pip, Sara, Nip, and Bounce try to get Sara's tooth out so she can enter a play. The series is based off of a movie series I made with my camera and my toys.
What is your series, HighlightZ, about?
HighlightZ is a series about four girls, Cora, Claire, Carla, and Carol who have a crazy secret in their family. As they grow up, they learn more about it. Their relatives have powers. And soon, they find that they have them, too! Along with a friend named Prilla, they learn more and more on how to control it, and as they get older, it gets stronger, too. There is only one book in the series so far, and that book is called, of course, HighlightZ. In the story, the girls meet Prilla and learn to get along. The story is based off of a fun little game I played with my cousins!
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I discover mine when I'm pretty bored on an afternoon after school, I'll go online and read any free story that looks interesting.
What will your next poem be about?
My next poem will be another sequel to Cat-astrophe and Toothache, in which the poem is about Bounce instead of Pip and Sara. It will be called, "Middle School's a Pain". Bounce, the playful kitten, is trying out for the Kitty Cat Middle School basketball team. But on the day of the tryouts, he sprains his ankle. Pip, Sara, and Nip are determined to get him on the team, so they pretend to be Bounce at the tryouts, but that doesn't go well at all!
