Interview with Melissa A. Hanson

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Southern California and both of my books are located based on my hometown.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read several different genres from YA, to new adult, historical romances, adult romances, mystery suspense, thrillers. Main stream and so many new indie authors as well.
Describe your desk
A complete and utter mess right now! I've got a new custom desk on order and I'm hoping that it will get me re-organized because I hate having everything in complete disarray!
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My kindle app on either my iPad or iPhone.
What is your writing process?
I write late at night on the weekends primarily when the house is quiet. Writing is a secondary job for me. I have a full time job during the week as a professional running my own company.

I have to write with music. But, it can’t have any words, otherwise I find myself typing the words in the middle of the book. I have found that certain soundtrack scores have worked really well for my “writing music”. Not the entire soundtrack but often specific songs. They are also more inspiring when it was a movie I really loved.

I typically snack on "writing food" which varies, from greek yogurt, to wheat thin crackers. :)
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Recently I've met some awesome people on Instagram. They are so creative with taking pictures of books in different scenes and locations. You can also follow me on Instagram @mahwriting
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I liked the control of deciding how I wanted to distribute my work and being able to write what I wanted and publish when I wanted.
When did you first start writing?
I wrote in junior high and high school a lot of short stories and even hand wrote and eventually re-typed my very first novel during my freshman/sophomore year of high school. Then I ventured into a different career and didn't do any more creative writing until about five years ago when after reading through a four book series in less than a week the bug to write was once again upon me.
What's the story behind your latest book?
For “A Healing Spirit” I was thinking about what story I might be able to tell to follow up after "A Healing Heart". A couple years previous to the beginning of writing I had a client who’s daughter had fallen over thirty-two feet from a chair lift and survived. Just her story was amazing. After contacting her and interviewing her I was inspired to use pieces of her story to create Mia’s journey. At the end of the book under the Author's Notes I tell a little bit about her real life accident and journey.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
When I get messages from people about how my books have touched them emotionally. If my writing can help even just one person it makes it all worthwhile.
What are you working on next?
I'm currently working on Riverview Series book 3, which will be Natasha's story. Right now it will probably be called "A Healing Touch". I'm also in the midst of a story that would be more young adult and unrelated to the Riverview Series.
