Interview with Maira Bakenova

Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
When I was eight I wrote a short story about five best friends. Having recently discovered Nickelodeon, I was obsessed with "Hey, Arnold!" and "As Told by Ginger", from which my child self drew inspiration. I recall including Pegasus in my story...Oh! The title was "Pegasus in the moonlight".
What are your five favorite books, and why?
The first trilogy I've ever read was "His Dark Materials" by Philip Pullman. It is surprising how this trilogy is considered a children's reading, given the number of heavy topics described and dealt with in the novels. I was Lyra's age when I started "The Northern Lights", and it is that special novel that made me fall in love with fantasy. Lyra's world is so vivid and deep, and she is a character that you'd want to look up to.
I am a sucker for romance, and each of my favourite books has a romance storyline. And I am a fan of time travel. It would've been a crime if I said I didn't love H.G.Wells' "The Time Machine". It is a classic that laid the foundations of the time travel concept in science fiction, and it depicts the year 802,701 - (not the best time to be human) I haven't seen anyone writing about such a distant future.
"The Thirty-First of June" by J.B.Priestley is one of my favourites for its fast-paced story about love defying centuries with satirical elements and magic.
...Magic! I love magic! as much as l love science fiction, which in reality is a bit controversial, but I believe that magic is a science in its own right.
Another beloved masterpiece is Isaac Asimov's "Pebble in the Sky". Old-fashioned, involving time travel, romance, science and saving the world - what is there not to love?
And yet another favourite is "The Moonstone". I enjoy my reading with an element of mystery to it, and this novel by Wilkie Collins is all about that...and there is romance too. Naturally.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Through writing I can create places, situations, people... whole new worlds! There are characters that I would've liked to meet in the real world, become friends with them, learn more about their lives. A good character ends up having a life of their own, and this is what makes me happy.
