Interview with Christopher Maloney

How do you approach cover design?
My goal is to combine something from the book with something from my own life that I value. Truthfully, I hope the cover simply doesn't deter readers, as I am constantly growing in my work. I'm working with a graphic artist, but he can only generate what I can visualize.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
The Little Prince - For its quiet satire.
Bone - An epic graphic novel reminiscent of Pogo and the other great comics.
Gandhi's Autobiography - Bringing a figurehead into a human realm.
Anything by Ray Bradbury - I like his tone when approaching the fantastic.
Pride and Prejudice - Another age, another set of problems.
I could go on and on, but that's five.
What do you read for pleasure?
Medical articles, comment boards, graphic novels, classic fantasies, anything on an audio book.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have a kindle, but I prefer pages or my computer screen.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I've been marketing to friends, who market to friends. I also did a short story for the local library fundraiser that got a lot of press.
Describe your desk
Socks, medical papers, earphones, some Chinese fortune sticks. old cell phones, bills to pay, motivational stickies. A wall calendar that's out of date. My favorite postcard from the Chicago Art Institute that looks just like my wife.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I moved a lot, but I consider home to be Monmouth, Oregon, the location of my first children's fantasy novel.
When did you first start writing?
I've been writing as an author since the second grade. Someday I might publish my highly derivative semi-novel based on some boiler plate science fiction series of the 1970s.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Which one? Right now I'm working on explaining ten dimensional space to my children through a first person, multi-character trilogy. The story is that my boys want fresh, raw story every night before bed and I work to deliver on time with some level of quality.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Timing. I've got a lot of niche pieces I need to publish for my patients. My agent isn't interested in trying to get them out to a wider audience unless they take off.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Not yet. I just published yesterday.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I put things together and tell the story to myself as well as you. I hope you love it as much as I do!
What do your fans mean to you?
I love people who love what I love!
What are you working on next?
So many things. I think I need to go back to a sequel of my Jane Austen derivative work because my patients are clamoring for a sequel.
Who are your favorite authors?
Bradbury, Lovecraft, Doyle, Krishnamurti, Shakespeare, it goes on and on.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I need to get up and take care of my family, and squeeze in some time to write.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I'm a naturopathic doctor, a father, and I take care of my community. It's a wonder I can write at all.
What is your writing process?
In a world of plotters, I'm a pantser. That means I start a book without any idea of where it will go, and follow it to the end. It's the same if I'm writing fiction or researching a medical condition. You go where the story takes you, and the choices that are interesting as you go along should be interesting for others. As I go along, I will research different aspects of the story, looking for answers and incorporating them into the final product.
