Interview with Imani J. Walton

What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy of writing is bringing a character to life and seeing a piece of myself in each and every one.
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans are my motivation. I write for myself and for others to enjoy. So even if I have only one devoted reader, they mean the world to me.
What are you working on next?
I keep jumping from story idea to story idea. It's difficult for me to focus on just one story so I have tons of things to write, improve and share with the world.
Who are your favorite authors?
Veronica Roth and Caragh O'Brien are my favorite authors and I aspire to reach their level of writing.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
The first story ever wrote (and completed) was in 8th grade for a creative project. The minimum for the story was about 2 pages and I wrote 15. I can't remember for the life of me what it was about but my teacher seemed to enjoy it.
How do you approach cover design?
Usually my cover designs reflect the mindsight of the main character or include an object that was emphasized in the book.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Kindle Fire.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing in middle school because we had so many assigments that involved creative writing. After that, it just stuck.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My dog needing to go outside is one thing and the thought that hopefully one day, I'll make an impact on someone somewhere and I can't do that sleeping all day.
What do you read for pleasure?
Recently, I've jumped on the dystopian society bandwagon. But I try to stay open-minded and read anything that someone tells me is good or seems interesting.

Melaina Roberts is not a lesbian. She doesn't like girls. Okay there was that one but that was a phase. She was just confused and lost. She's over that. She's strictly straight and if she tells herself that enough, it'll be true. Eventually this pain in her chest and distaste in her mouth will disappear, right?
