Interview with Mark Trimeloni

What is your writing process?
I really don't have one. The stories come to me at any time. Mostly, at night when I'm trying to sleep. Anything can trigger them. I recently wrote a story for a contest when the picture you were to write about sent an entire story into my head. I had to stop everything and write it. Won third place in the contest. Some stories come to me in pieces. Others, in their entirety. I've had some rolling around in my head for 15 to 20 years. All of them begging to be written.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Old Yeller. At the end, I cried.
How do you approach cover design?
I design my own covers. I take random photos, add my book title plus my name, and I'm done. My current book covers have my face on them. The idea is to have a reader enter my mind to read my story. Because that is what a person is doing when they open a book. Entering the mind of the author. Kinda scary in a way.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Stephen King "Salem's Lot": Scared me so bad. I started wearing a cross.
Stephen King "Pet Sematary": First book I read where a young child bit the dust.
Stephen King "The Stand": Loved the virus wiping out the world's population idea.
Stephen King "The Dark Tower": Fell in love with the child character and Roland.
Stephen King "The Shining": A scary trip through an isolated hotel. What's not to love?
What do you read for pleasure?
This is a hard subject for me. I love to read. I am desperate for stories that fall into my preferred genre' of Nudist Horror. I have been a nudist since I was 15. I have loved horror novels my entire life. I started writing out of desperation to have something to read. I have been writing nudist characters into my stories ever since and will continue to do so out of necessity. I believe there are more people like me that need a good nudist horror novel to make them want to read. Other than my books, Stephen King is the only author I read for pleasure.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I don't have one. Trying to get my mom to buy me a Kindle. I will always prefer the smell, feel, and look of a used paperback. Just knowing so many hands have touched the pages gives me a thrill.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
E-books. I simply love Smashwords. They have given me a voice where I simply wouldn't have one. I've tried many traditional publishers and been turned down repeatedly. The material I write is controversial and completely new. I am a Nudist Horror Writer. Most people don't know what that is let alone be willing to take a chance on anyone writing it. I have been writing in this genre' for 17 years and have yet to make a substantial breakthrough in people's perceptions of both nudity and horror. But with the help of Smashwords, all that is going to change.
Describe your desk
I don't have one. I own one piece of furniture. A bed. I've been living like this for 20 years now. I have my computer on a dresser without drawers. Had to dump them on my way to my new place. An empty dresser is easier to move. And I move a lot. I have the dresser along the side of my bed. I write lying down with the keyboard on my stomach. I'm always naked when I write so the keyboard doesn't move around much. I wonder if this is TMI?
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a small town in PA. My first published novel takes place in an isolated nudist community. I've drawn from some personal experiences to write it. I imagine the influences are subconscious in all my writing.
When did you first start writing?
I wrote my first novel when I was 22. Not by choice, but by necessity. I had exhausted my Stephen King novels and tried several authors with no interest. I knew in order to get something to read. I'd have to write it myself. I wrote my first novel, "FleshEaters" over three months during a summer off from the IRS. I came out of that experience a changed person. I first started writing in high school. I became editor-in-chief of the school newspaper where my writing was controversial even then. I won the quill & scroll and a $50 prize for an essay on the capitol building in Washington, DC. I was invited to get into a writing school my junior year, but failed. I don't think they got me.
What's the story behind your latest book?
"Abuse", which is currently being released in installments as I write it every Friday on my website under the heading, "New Fiction Fridays", presents a simple idea. Imagine a world where having a marriage license allows you to legally do anything to anyone else in that family. I did.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I have no choice. No publisher will touch me until I've proven the Nudist Horror genre'. Plus, I like running my own businesses. This gives me all the control.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
There is no question Smashwords has made me what I am today. I love being able to offer my work to a larger audience. The worse thing in the world is a story unread. Smashwords makes it possible to keep stories from going without readers.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
To hear someone appreciate my work. I don't write for money. I write for the people, who like me, just want something interesting to read.
What do your fans mean to you?
I don't know if I have any. No one has come out and said they are a fan of my work. I think they prefer to read in silence for now. I get the feeling they are out there though.
What are you working on next?
I have so much to do. I have two complete books I've written that need edited and released. I have a dozen more novels at various stages of completion. I have another dozen stories rolling around in my head waiting to be written. For now, I'm going to complete the "Abuse" novel.
What is your biggest fear?
That I am nothing more than a character in a Stephen King novel. That he is writing me writing this even now.
Why do you write?
I write because I have to. I write because the stories keep coming and won't leave me alone. I write to give the characters in my head life-who so desperately want to live. I write to be sane.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I play on-line games or work.
