Interview with Mary Chase Comstock

What motivated you to become an indie author?
I was tired of publishers telling me what stories people wanted to read. There were stories I wanted to write, but they insisted on the same old thing. I love designing my own covers, doing my own marketing and above all, listening to my readers.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
A lot of writing is just plain work, but there are times--for example, when a new character walks onto the page unexpectedly--when my heart leaps. There's nothing like it!
Who are your favorite authors?
There are so many! Jane Austen is a perennial favorite, of course, and Georgette Heyer. I love Connie Willis and Louise Penny, too. Ann Patchett, Jasper Fforde, Alice Hoffman...too many to list!
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I wouldn't call it inspiration, but I have an Irish Wolfhound who weighs almost 200 lbs. and he insists on being fed every morning.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I teach writing and I read a lot, of course. I also have dusting and other housework that I work hard at neglecting.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I started with a Kindle, but now I prefer my iPad. No idea why :-)
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Word of mouth for the most part. That and making my family buy lots of copies.
