Interview with Mary Ellen Quire

Published 2016-02-25.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Charlotte's Web by E.B. White was the first novel I read. I loved the way the author made me feel about and for the characters. It made me want to create characters of my own.
What do you read for pleasure?
Usually I read a lot of Urban Fantasy and Dystopia, but lately I'm finding a lot of the old classics extremely entertaining.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Kindle Fire
Describe your desk
My desk is pretty large, wooden with lots of cabinet and drawer space. Somehow, I still manage to clutter it up.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Kentucky which has put more of a rural or small town/city feel to my writing.
When did you first start writing?
In grade school of course. I loved it when the teacher gave a writing assignment, but I didn't seriously consider writing for more than my enjoyment until about fifteen years ago.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The story behind my latest book is my own cat, Sheldon. He is quite the character in real life, but I started wondering what was really going on his crazed head. This in turn led to the question of what does he really do when I'm away, and that question led to the writing of Sheldon's Diary.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love creating new characters. It's the mystery of it all really. I love finding out who and what they are as I go along.
What do your fans mean to you?
Fans mean a lot to me. While writing is a fun thing for me and I do enjoy doing it for its own sake, there's nothing to replace the joy I feel when sharing it with others. And if they enjoy it, all the better.
What are you working on next?
I have a few projects in the works. Sheldon's Diary and the Cheddar Diary are ongoing of course, but I am also working on a detective series, a paranormal thriller, and light-hearted assassin novel.
Who are your favorite authors?
There are so many, mainly because there are just so many good books out there. But I guess my two favorite authors are Stephen King and Jim Butcher.
