Interview with Mary May

Published 2013-08-31.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in De Queen Ar. It's a small town in SW Arkansas. It was and still is a rural community, I was raised with horses dogs and cats for playmates! We had small town value's and traditions. I think that it gave me my down to earth mentality. We prayed each morning before class started and at each football game and rodeo. God was ever present and included in our lives. We didn't think about it, it just WAS.
When did you first start writing?
Oh wow let me think... honestly probably in the second or third grade. I started out writing short stories then I started on poetry and Christian music.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Gideon is actually a representation of anyone that has grown up knowing about Christ, but maybe didn't have the heart knowledge. I was saved in the third grade and I grew up with Christ so I don't know how to live otherwise. But I have seen people that attended the same church I did every Sunday and somehow just didn't get it. Gideon's story parallels that. He knows Christ, he just doesn't have a relationship WITH Christ. But it also shows how real life Christians live their lives and deal with the day to day stresses and tragedies by turning to Christ. These characters are real and believable. Yes there is a lot of "fantasy" but not about the relationship the people have with our God.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
When you work with a publisher you lose a lot of control over your product. I have said many times that I'm really just the co-author in this series. I get all my inspiration from the Lord. LOL if you knew me you wouldn't have any problem believing that! My mom has told me that she KNOWS the Lord is directing my thoughts because she knows I'm not that smart! I just want to be able to deliver this series the way God wants it done.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
well, that's a loaded question. I haven't had a lot of success YET... but a lot of that is because I'm not familiar with just how to work the "system" I'm good with the creative side but I lack in the business and promoting areas. I am hoping this interview will help readers come to know me and enjoy The Gideon series
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I get so lost in writing and involved with my characters that they almost become real to me. LOL Does that make me crazy? I tell my hubby there is a lot of people living in my head and it gets a little crowded sometimes! But the joy comes when a reader tells me how much my book as blessed them, or helped them have a closer walk with Christ. I just want everyone to know the Jesus I know.
What do your fans mean to you?
only EVERYTHING! without my fans to encourage me and to remind me sometimes on a daily basis, why I spend hour after hour on the computer or countless hours at book signings away from my family. My fans keep me going!
What are you working on next?
I am currently working on book two in the Angel Chronicles series. Its called Saving Gideon (The Angel Chronicles) Heart lessons. I am shooting for a late Sept or early Oct release date! This series will have somewhere between 5-8 books total. I'm not sure just how many it will take to tell the story so I'm leaving the book count open for now.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I write Christian music. When I don't have my head bent over my computer keyboard, it's bent over my Yamaha keyboard putting music to whatever new song I have been working on. I named my keyboard "Mozart" because it is so smart! Lol
What is your writing process?
It's very complicated step one - Sit at my computer Step two- place hands on keys- step three- try to keep up as the story flows! Seriously, that's how it works for me. I never sit and ponder what to write next or what a character may say or do, it just comes up from my heart and just try to keep up! People ask me what will happen with this person or that person in this series and I tell them I don't know! Lol and its the truth. I wont know until I write it! I surprise myself constantly!
How do you approach cover design?
The cover is so important! Almost as much as the story itself! The cover is what makes the reader stop and pick it up, or stop and read more about it. The cover must tell the reader in a glance what your story is about. I approach cover design like this...I have to love it! It cant grow on me, or sorta catch my attention, I have to instantly be smitten with it or its no good! With this series I want to keep the same sky and the same yellow-red and orange background. That will make it easily identifiable as a Gideon book! My cover designer is going nuts trying to keep that theme going! (Love you DEE!!)
Describe your desk
Kitchen table. Lol we have two computers, one for the family and the other for my books. My computer sits on the kitchen table. Yeah, we are one of those family's that eat dinner in front of the flat screen...
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
The first story that I wrote that anyone ever read was a homework assignment in the 6th grade. The teacher started the story with the first line "It was a dark and stormy night..." we had to fill in the rest. It was around Halloween..Lol Mine was the class favorite!
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
My mom was reading me Bible stories and my favorite was David and Goliath. No matter how big or scary your "giant" is as long as you have faith and believe God is with you anything is possible!
