Interview with Jason Michael Hiaeshutter

What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Obviously my wife and kids will always be number one. But second to that, I have a life where I get to get up and do so many of the things I grew up dreaming I'd get to do one day. On top of my writing, I am a front man for a rock/metal band, and an indie film actor. Between these three hobbies, every day feels like a new adventure. Every single day, I get to wake up in the middle of an adventure I have already started, or begin a new one. People always tell me how they have a desire to go out and do something different with their lives but don't know how to go about it. The trick is to just make that jump and enjoy every minute of it. It isn't about becoming famous and it isn't about making money. It is about chasing that dream your childhood self always wished it could catch. Getting to continue that chase every time you get out of bed is the greatest inspiration there is.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I think the first story I ever wrote was for a short film called Journey to Hyrem when I was about 14 years old. The story was about two friends who accidently stumbled into a parallel universe and had to find their way home. I found my original draft several years ago and tried reading through it. I can honestly say I am glad it never saw the light of day.
How do you approach cover design?
What a tricky question. So far, it's been a matter of choosing one specific thing in the story that stands out as significant to me and exploit it. For Final Solution it was the symbol of the Supreme Order Sanction. For Panic Gate, it was the hypnotic glance described so many times throughout the book. It does get tricky to decide what will translate best when all is said and done. I think for my next book, I will hire a professional and see if I get better results.
What do you read for pleasure?
It depends on my mood. Right now I am reading 11/22/63 by Stephen King. Time Travel stories are my absolute favorite, especially when it creates an alternate reality of true historic events. Fantasy novels are great when I really just need to get away and let my mind explore someone else's creation. Sci Fi is fun when you can explore an entire galaxy that someone created. The Edge of Apocalypse series by David Derrico, for example, was brilliant.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I am the proud owner of both and Kindle and a Nook. There are many pros and cons to both which I will not get into here. For my own personal preference, I enjoy reading from my Kindle. The soft backdrop is very easy on the eyes, and you still get a feel that you are looking at paper. The Nook is closer to a computer screen; a feature my wife seems to prefer.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Panic Gate is the story of a reality game show gone incredibly wrong. To save money in their budget, the show producers chose to film on a plot of land under the control of an evil mind controlling deity. A decision they will soon come to regret.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
The lack of interest in traditional publishers? Lol. Seriously, it's a matter of not wanting to compromise my vision for what most literary agents are looking for. I don't write for fame or money. I write because I have stories in my head that need to come out. This is a passion for me, not a paycheck. But when I do finish a story, I want to share it. I see no point in pouring over my keyboard for months, or maybe even years, just to let the story sit in some abandoned file on my hard drive. I have had literary agents tell me what they want me to write and I just wasn't interested. Harry Potter was fun, but I have no interest in making a carbon copy because the formula works. Hey, maybe my formula doesn't work and I get that. But at least it's mine.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I have written both short stories and novels. The novels I put out with POD publishers but I couldn't seem to find an outlet for my short stories. Smashwords gave me the option to write my own work and make it available to the public. And the novels, sure my POD publishers made my in print novels available on Barnes and Noble and other big on-line stores like that. But POD's can get expensive and many people don't want to spend $20 on a no name author. Smashwords made me available on every ereader device you could think of, including the Nook. And I got to set a price that I considered reasonable.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
This is the easiest question I've seen yet. The greatest joy is being able to create a story that I can get excited about. And thanks to Smashwords, I know that I will have a vehicle to make it available to the public. Writing is fun. Being able to share what I've written with others is a dream come true.
What are you working on next?
I've done a straight action story, I've tried my hand at Lovecraftian Horror. Now I am working on a series of Sci Fi stories. The first of which is a story that takes place 100 years after the destruction of the Earth and the only Earthblood humans left in the galaxy are forced into slavery.
