Interview with Matthew Young

What are your five favorite books, and why?
It changes very very often, but right now they are:

- All Quiet on the Western Front
- Starship Troopers
- Dante's Inferno
- Candide
- Catch-22

Most books that I consider my favorite have a scene or moment that stays with me for a long time, can consistently make me laugh, and/or will make me remember how I felt when I first read it.
Who are your favorite authors?
Ooh fun question: JORGE LUIS BORGES, first of all.

Steinbeck, Hemingway, Vonnegut, Asimov, Murakami, and David Sedaris. Capote, Joyce, Camus, Chinua Achebe, Alan Paton. Remarque. I like writers who can say a lot in few words, And I've laughed so hard reading David Sedaris I started crying.
What are your favorite movies?
I studied film in college but I'm also a man-child so my favorites range hugely. If I had to answer this question at a job interview they would be:

- The Bicycle Thief
- A Bout de Souffle
- Le Sange D'Une Poete
- Street of Crocodiles
- Do The Right Thing
- Parapluies de Cherbourg
- Hiroshima Mon Amour

and lately i've been thinking a lot of Le Samourai.

If I'm talking to my friends...

- Equilibrium
- Chronicles of Riddick
- Mortal Kombat II: Annihilation
- Tombstone
- Top Gun

You get the idea.

I also have a soft spot for really bad movies, as every actor has one and it's like that one weird person that they dated and it's very endearing. I could talk about movies longer than I could talk about books, actually
What do you read for pleasure?
Graphic Novels - very easy and fun to digest, but are also an amazing art form that have a unique storytelling style that is in some ways superior to a words-only format. Very fun to compare and contrast them to literature, and movies as well since graphic novels are basically storyboards for film.

Currently reading and enjoying Saga and Sandman.

I also really enjoy webcomics! PBF, XKCD, SMBC, Dinosaur Comics - but I have a special place in my heart for Nedroid.
What are you working on next?
The second installment of The Wild Beasts of Anthony Mannis, which will take place in a completely different environment - we'll meet more bad guys, more good guys, more monsters - everything will get kicked up a notch, including character growth! :O
Describe your desk
Very Messy. It's filled with watercolor paintings and pens and papers and coffee cups and has just enough space for a laptop and mouse. I've worked on clean desks before and I can't find anything I need.
Where did you get your ideas for...everything?
I got my ideas for everything from everything!

I pulled from many different mythologies - Oceanic, Greek, Nordic, Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Chinese, Japanese, Mayan. I borrowed from video games, tv shows, movies, other books. Art I've seen in museums. Buildings I've seen on the street. Songs that get stuck in my head. Names of people I've met at parties and were fun to say out loud.

Anyone who says that they've invented something is a bald-faced liar. There's nothing new under the sun and to have gotten this far to have created something I have stood on the shoulders of giants. Everything I do is an homage to them and those before me.
A story about kids that go on a quest? I've seen it before.
As Roger Ebert says, it's not what a story is about, it's how it's about it. If humans were only allowed to write one story about epic heroes we'd have never gotten past Gilgamesh back in 2100 BC (the good ol' days, am I right)?
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
When something has been written, it is real and will live forever
