Interview with Matthew Holley

What motivated you to become an indie author?
Writing was always more of a hobby of mine than something I hoped to make money at. I'm always my own worst critic and have never viewed my work as publish-worthy. I have so many story ideas in my head and I use writing as an outlet to get them all out. The few people who have read my stories have always told me I should try publishing them, so I became an Indie author.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords makes it so easy to publish a book on-line that even a person who doesn't know their way around a computer very well, like myself, has very little trouble. If it weren't for Smashwords, my stories would still be trapped somewhere inside the electronic guts of my computer.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
When I write, I get lost in my story. The mundane world around me fades away. I'm not worrying about problems at work. I'm not questioning whether or not I paid the light bill this month. I'm not wondering if it's time to get the oil changed in the car. All my mind is focusing on is my story. It's a great escape.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I'm not working at my remodeling company, I like to keep myself busy by playing golf, riding bikes, painting, and lifting weights. I also enjoy spending evenings with my wife curled up next to me on the couch watching a good movie.
What is your writing process?
After a story has rolled around in my head for awhile, I write down a short outline of how I think the story is going to proceed, but that outline is written on paper, not stone. So many times, my stories have gone off on a tangent of their own and I simply have to hang on for the ride, wondering, with great anticipation, how the story is going to end.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I read Robinson Crusoe when I was a young boys and I loved it. It was a book full of adventure and discovery, things a boy, and even someone a bit older, really enjoys. If I could write a story half as good as Daniel Defoe, I'd be someone then.
What do you read for pleasure?
A lot of Dean Koontz and Steven King. I like their style and I enjoy thrillers.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
In my early years, I lived in Fort Pierce, Florida. located on the East coast of the peninsula. Fort Pierce was, and still is, a town divided down the middle between white folks and black folks. As a young child, I witnessed many acts of racism and bigotry. Racial riots were common. Crimes of hate, plentiful. Kindness between people of different skin color was rare and when I was privy to witness such acts of goodness, it filled my young soul with happiness and hope. A lot of this influence, came out in my latest book, Bonds of the Heart.
What do your fans mean to you?
When a fan reads my stories and enjoys them, it makes me feel so proud. I enjoy bringing people enjoyment, even if it is only for a few hundred pages of their time. I appreciate when a fan gives my stories a review, even if the review isn't a positive one. Their constructive comments only make me a better writer.
What are you working on next?
I have two stories potential stories in my head. One is a continuation of the last book a wrote, Bonds of the Heart. The other is a story of a girl who is kidnapped by a man for the sole purpose of forcing the girl to realize how judgmental and superficial she is.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
