Interview with Maya Gavric

What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I wake up motivated each morning. In my opinion life is about love, experience, creating, learning, helping others and fulfill a sense of purpose and self-worth. Creativity, problem solving, reading, and absorbing new information stimulate my way of thinking and make my life interesting and worth living.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your cooking and writing?
I grew up in Croatia, small European country with a great taste for food. I come from a family with great food traditions and numerous good cooks in the family. My mother was professional chef, and naturally there was always excellent food on the table and a lot of people visiting to enjoy it. After my brother and me were born, she did stop working as professional chef and started small part-time catering business. My mother needed a helper, so my work in the kitchen and cooking started early. She was an excellent cook, but she didn't have habit to write recipes for the dishes she prepared. Most of the recipes were improvised and in her head. People loved her food and would always ask for recipe, so my first food writing was basically related to recording her recipes and giving them to anybody who asked for them. Back then we didn't have computers and printers, and we didn't even have typewriter, so every recipe was hand written by me many times and given away. Sometimes, when I had a chance, some of the recipe were photocopied.
What is your writing process?
That depends on form and type of writing I do. With fiction and books for children, I need quiet place with soft tones of classical music playing in the background. I usually let my mind to wander freely than write ideas in my notebook. With non-fiction, because I write facts, I prefer to make short notes on paper, than sit behind computer to do research and write.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, I was 8 years old and it was fiction about girl who had a flying dog. My story was also illustrated. I remember my teacher was more impressed with my illustrations than text, but most of the kids were laughing and teasing me about it.
What do you like most about writing?
Writing makes my life more meaningful and I do it because I feel others might benefit from what I am writing.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I love walking, cooking for my family and friends, reading, developing recipes, listening to music, playing games, meditating, creating art and designing. Some of my best creative ideas come to mind when I'm walking outside and cooking. These activities include repetitive activity which triggers my body's relaxation response, provides an immediate energy boost and improves my mood.
What kind of books you like to read?
I am an avid reader and read a variety of books. I love espionage, action thrillers, romance, science fiction and paranormal. I still love reading paper books however I also love the convenience of eBooks and consider them the next stage in our evolution.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My computer and my tablet are my reading devices.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I was looking for an easier way to get published and feel others might benefit from what I am writing.
How do you approach cover design?
I think every book needs a well designed cover because readers really do judge books by their covers. The good designed cover will open the the door to new readers and will provide every book with better visibility. Recognizing this, I invest a lot of time and energy into creating my own quality cover designs.
Describe your desk
I do a lot of writing and researching at my desk, so my desk has computer with two monitors and it is usually covered in paper with ideas, art sketches and many other things I need when writing. Typically it has a lot of pens and pencils, couple notebooks, water bottle, tea cup, hand cream and phone. It may look cluttered to someone else, but it is in perfect order for me. I try to keep my desk as orderly as possible, but that is a hard task which I'm failing at miserably almost every day. Since I'm clean freak and neat, my desk is usually the only messy place in my house.
What are you working on next?
