Interview with M.B. Gerard

What are you working on next?
The new Love Game novel, Season 2013. My first whodunnit (somebody dies at the end of Season 2012)! I'm working on the story right now and will start writing soon.
Do you always know the end of the story before you start writing?
Yes, I do. I used to just start writing without knowing where the story would go - and after five pages I got lost and because I didn't know what to do I started re-writing. I never finished those novels.
Getting into screenwriting helped me a lot in understanding structure and basic patterns of storytelling. For Love Game I always know where the story goes and ends as I already have the next season in mind. This means before I started writing Part 2 I had an idea for Part 3, and so on.
How long does an average writing session take?
I try to have about 3-5 hours for writing. Less doesn't work for me because I need at least one hour to get into a steady writing flow. After five hours I get restless and have to do something else.
How do you approach cover design?
I like uncluttered, unobtrusive book covers. Especially for ebooks with their small cover images it's important that you readers are able to read the title. I also wanted readers to quickly understand that my novels are part of a series, this being the reason of very similar covers for Season 2011 and Season 2012. I thought it was fun trying different photos and creating the covers for my novels by myself.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I don't remember the first story I wrote, but I always liked to invent stories. I also remember that my dad used to play a 'game' with me and my brother. He gave us three random words and we were supposed to write a story with them. It was funny how each story turned out to be completely different.
What do you read for pleasure?
Everything. Crime, thrillers, highbrow literature, funny novels.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My iPhone. I travel a lot and don't want to carry an extra device.
Describe your desk
You don't want that.
Who are your favorite authors?
Ian McEwan and Patricia Highsmith. There are many others I love reading though.
