Interview with Michael Lewis

What prompted you to write your first book?
My first book, Dating Delilah, was born out of an eighteen-month long terrible affair I had with a married woman. Upon being delivered from this hellish experience, through divine intervention I believe, I decided that there was something good that could come out of it. I wanted to share the experiences I had throughout this period of time, with a view towards helping others to avoid the pitfalls of adultery. The inspiration really came from Dr. Robert Schuller, who on his Hour of Power television program, often talked about turning one’s scars into stars. I then decided to turn my scar of adultery into a star that could light the way for anyone who might be tempted to commit this sin, or for those who might be already trapped in it and are seeking desperately to get out.
When did you discover your writing talent?
In my early teen years, my essays in high school came in for much praise from my teachers. I particularly remember an English Language teacher I had in grade 9, who would read my essays in front of the class, and commented on how well-written they were. It was then that I discovered my talent for writing. That experience really motivated me, and since then I have had a passion for writing, although I am only now getting into it on a professional basis.
Have you always wanted to be a writer?
In my early teens when I started to enjoy reading novels, particularly those novels that I studied for English Literature in school, I would sit and stare at the pictures of the authors on the cover pages of those books, and would wish that I could be like them some day. I admired those writers and saw myself writing professionally some day. Maybe I should have got into professional writing sooner. :) Anyway, better late than never.
What genre(s) of books do you plan to write?
I want to start off writing non-fiction books dealing with social, moral, and spiritual issues in the light of Biblical principles - specifically in the areas of relationships, sexuality, child-rearing, education, social media, etc. Maybe later on, I shall decide to write fiction, particularly romantic fiction.
What are you hoping to accomplish from your writing career?
I want to use my writing talent to deliver positive messages to my readers, so as to improve their personal and professional lives. I see writing as a powerful medium through which such improvement can be accomplished. I want to make people more successful in every area of their lives. I enjoy seeing people happy. It makes me happy too. These objectives, I believe, can be accomplished if people follow Biblical principles. So whenever I write a book, whatever genre it might be, I want to know that after reading it, a person would have been left with a positive, spiritual message.
Do you like to read, and what do you read?
To be honest, I do not read as much as I would like to and as much as I used to. Nowadays, most of my reading is work-related. I suppose that as a writer, I’ll need to develop the habit of reading, so as to be able to critique and assess my own writing in comparison with others. I like human-development books. Any book that helps you to succeed in the areas of relationships, time-management, etc., is my type of book. Adventure books capture my interest too.
What kind of upbringing have you had, and how has this helped to shape your writing?
Growing up in a small rural town on an island in the Caribbean, I was taught sound moral values by my parents, particularly by my mother who was a good Christian woman. One value my mother taught us was that of patience. When we wanted to have our way right away, she would often quote the old proverb “Rome wasn’t built in a day”. Another value she taught us was that of contentment. She often told us that we should not look at what others have, because we didn’t know how they got it. With such values instilled in me from an early age, one can understand why I plan to write on positive themes.
When you’re not writing, how do you spend your time?
I like looking at and being with nature. There is a vast world out there to explore and enjoy. So whenever I am not writing, I may go to the beach and walk on the sand or just sit and watch the waves roll in, or I may go driving along the coast of my beautiful Caribbean island and watch the scenic views. I can never get enough of that. I also like spending time around family and great friends. Besides that, I like working on home-improvement projects. I always find something to build or repair, in an effort to beautify my home or make it more convenient. I enjoy working with my hands. I find great pleasure in getting all sweaty and dirty working at home on some project. At the end of it, I gain a sense of satisfaction, knowing that I have used my artistic talent to accomplish something. I also get that same feeling after troubleshooting and fixing some problem with my car.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Sometimes I think that there are not enough hours in the day to accomplish all the things that I would like to. I am a high-energy person who loves life. With anticipation, I look forward to waking up each day to use my creative energies to serve Christ and my fellowmen.
Are you hoping to become a big name in writing?
To be honest, becoming a big name in writing is not my focus. My major objective in writing is to educate, motivate and inspire others into taking courses of action that can help them become better human beings who love themselves and their fellow men. If in the process of doing so I become a big name, then I’ll accept it with grace.
