Interview with Shaylynn (a.k.a Michelle) Mendes (D.)

Published 2016-01-07.
Who are your favorite authors?
I really love James Patterson, Christopher Pike, and Cassandra Clare. They all inspired me to write the different elements that I do, in my stories.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Sometimes, I'm not always looking forward to waking up, but what inspires me to get out of bed are the people that I know I will see that day.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I usually read, or look for things that motivate me. I would also go out to take pictures, or volunteer.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
The first story I ever wrote was in 2nd grade. My teacher back then, encouraged me to write a lot. I wrote a story about two little children in a haunted house.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was a really fortunate kid growing up. My parents were always around me. Although we lived in a pretty poor environment, I don't think that ever affected me. But, when I looked at the people around me, I think that's what influenced my writing the most, because these people's stories really had an effect on me.
When did you first start writing?
I first started writing back in second grade when my writing teacher told me she saw some potential in me whenever I wrote little things, here and there on my notebook.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love writing because it helps me let out so many of my emotions. The little emotions I would be feeling, are expressed way overboard in my stories, and it just becomes easier to exaggerate on.
How do you approach cover design?
When I choose a cover, I want a cover that wouldn't reveal the story. I want one, that would lead people on to think something differently, so that when they get to the ending, it would hopefully be a surprise to them.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
I have too many favorite books to choose from c:
What do you read for pleasure?
I love reading anything with mystery, romance, adventure, or fantasy.
