Interview with M.E. Cardona

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a small town in Mexico, which is the subject I write about in my first two books. I have seen the effects of poverty on a family, and this in itself is experience I can relate to when I write about a character who is in the same situation. My father was the main influence on the way I tell a story, he is gone now, but he gave me a gift, that of storytelling, and I have passed it on to my son who is an author himself.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book can be preordered now, and it is a collection of short stories that I heard while growing up, most are from my father and mother, some are legends told in that small town I called home for the first 8 years of my life.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
My son was the main motivation. He has become an accomplished writer and one day, after telling him some of my stories, agreed that they should be published for others to experience, so he helps me with the editing and book cover design.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I used to sell jewelry that I designed at swap meets and that gave me some form of income, but my hands are not cooperating as they used to. And so this has helped me maintain my income and I have more time to spend with my grandkids when they come over and visit.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I suffer from mild depression and writing soothes my mind and calms me down. It helps me focus on the good things in life and appreciate what I do have, my health and my large family.
What are you working on next?
I have two stories in mind, both real-life tragedies. Haven't decided on which one I will write first? I guess we both have to wait and see.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I tend to my farm animals and "Buddy" always keeps me on my toes.
