Interview with J. B. Garner

Published 2014-05-13.
When did you first start writing?
I first started writing when I was very young, if you count crayon comic pages, which I totally do. English was always one of my favorite classes and I voraciously read and wrote throughout high school. I turned away from the calling during college and my problematic years after, but I never lost the urge, I just hid it. Now I feel much better being back into the full swing of writing.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Both of my first release novels have their inspirations from ideas and thoughts in my past. Indomitable has a genesis in my love of superheroes and comic books, while The Opening Bell not only has a root in my childhood love of professional wrestling, but my high school years at arcades playing Street Fighter. The ability to turn something that almost seems silly into a deadly serious affair is something I found quite intriguing.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
When I decided to seriously try my hand at being an author, the independent route was a godsend. I believe it will give me a chance to prove my talent and get my name out there when I would otherwise be lost in the shuffle of publishers and agents.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
The Style Guide was certainly a godsend when it came to turning my raw manuscript into something easy to read. In addition, the other free guides to E-Publishing and Marketing were also packed full of information I wouldn't have known about or considered had I walked into the situation unprepared.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
To just get these stories and characters trapped in my head on to paper (virtual though it is) is a joy enough. I get enjoyment simply by writing. To be really honest, though, it is almost as joyful to hear from a complete stranger how much they enjoy your work and look forward to the next chapter or installment.
What do your fans mean to you?
To say that it isn't a validation to have other people enjoy your writing is a lie. I draw a lot of joy and pride from writing something that other people truly enjoy. Though I don't have many fans yet, they certainly mean a lot to me.
What are you working on next?
As soon as I take a brief breather, it's on to work on Indefatigable and The Tale of the Tape, the next books in each of my respective series. No rest for the weary, you know!
Who are your favorite authors?
I've always enjoyed Dashiell Hammett, Harry Harrison, J.K. Rowling, and Stephen King.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The prospects of a new chapter to write and a fresh cup of coffee. Seriously, though, I do look forward to getting back at the computer for more writing, but I am also inspired by the love and support of my friends and family. I wouldn't be able to do this without them.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I catch up on what television, movies, and books I like. I also have the guilty pleasure of playing a few action RPGs on my computer. We can't be working every moment of the day!
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Word of mouth, extensive searches, and reading a lot of samples. You never know when you'll find the next author you adore, after all.
