Interview with Melinda Brasher

When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Reading, travelling, planning trips, and playing games that challenge my mind.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I've pretty much always written stories, but my first novel was about a girl whose father should become king. When he hesitates, a charming younger nobleman slips onto the throne instead, destroying everything she knows. It's a living novel, even now, in its most recent incarnation. I hope to publish it soon.
What is your writing process?
Messy. I always have notebooks and word documents and slips of paper full of little notes and fragments, and then I have to weave them together. Then I revise about fourteen times.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read mostly fantasy, sci fi, and historical fiction, especially YA or upper-grade juvi, but I also read bits of everything else, and enjoy a good contemporary novel with unusual characters or settings or a thought-provoking premise. I lived abroad for a few years, and read whatever I could get my hands on: romances, Russian spy novels, mysteries, classics, humor, horror. The variety was good for me.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Kindle. I have a Kindle Touch and love it.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Getting to create the type of thing I want to read. I also love it when my characters do things I didn't plan on them doing, and when my critique group debates about what my characters are going to do.
What are you working on next?
I'm finishing up another YA stand-alone fantasy about a girl whose parents lock her away for showing signs of a dangerous and shameful magic. I'm also working on a couple of sci fi projects set on other planets.
