Interview with Melissa Baldwin

Published 2018-11-17.
What is your writing process?
My writing process has evolved since I published my first novel. I wrote my first few books sitting on my couch late at night.
I now have my own office and I write mostly during the day. I begin each of my stories by jotting down a few basic ideas, from there I write an outline and then I let the characters tell their stories.
Describe your desk
My desk is currently organized chaos. I have lists, notepads, notebooks and my trusty Erin Condren planner all within reach. Frames pictures of my family and handmade treasures from my daughter.
When did you first start writing?
I always had a passion for writing ever since I was a child. I actually enjoyed writing papers in school. When I was in college, I started writing a book about my personal dating experiences, which I quickly tossed out because nobody wants to read about that. :)
In 2014 I was inspired to finally follow through and complete my first book. At that time it was just a bucket list item, I had no intentions of writing more books.
Since then I’ve written thirteen more books, and I’m a bestselling author.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book, From Runway to Love is the third book in my Love in the City series. It releases on December 10, 2018. The main character, Olivia believes she has everything she could ever want. But, when fame is no longer exciting and the possibility of new love is on the horizon, Olivia realizes she has a few life-changing decisions to make.
If this is part of series, how did you come up with the idea for the series?
This series is about the journey of friendship and love of three friends. Stacy, Candace and Olivia are real women facing different life challenges. I know readers will be able relate to these amazing characters. I loved writing this series.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read Romantic Comedy, ChickLit, Women’s Fiction and Cozy Mystery. I love reading lighthearted stories. Life is serious enough—reading is a wonderful escape for me.
What are you currently working on?
I’m currently working on two Cozy Mystery novels. One is the follow up to my first cozy, Movie Scripts and Madness and the other is a brand new story. I also have a few other ideas in the works. 2019 is going to be a busy year.
What drives you to keep on writing?
The ideas continue to come, the voices continue to speak to me. I guess I will keep writing until they stop. :)
If you could tell your younger writing self anything, what would it be?
I would tell my younger self to not let the negativity in. Never doubt your abilities and to be proud of every book you write and every accomplishment.
What is the one thing you want your readers to know about your books?
My books are lighthearted and humorous. I want my readers to have place to escape the stress of daily life and become a part of my stories.
