Interview with Melissa Bell

Published 2014-03-04.
What is your writing process?
I use my iPhone's 'Notes App' as I can write anywhere and anytime. I never know when ideas, story lines are going to hit. So it goes where I go.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The very first story I read cover to cover was 'To Kill A Mocking Bird'. Before reading it, I hated reading with a passion. After reading it, I found my eyes open to a whole new world. I was about 11 years old at the time.
How do you approach cover design?
I have a great friend that can bring my mental imagery to life on the screen. Patricia Hones is a freelance graphic designer and amazing artist. I have been lucky to have know Patricia since we were kids. I give her a description of what I see in my head and Patricia makes it come to life.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
1. JR Wards - Black Dagger Brotherhood Series. 'Lover Awakened'
The torn and twisted characters, the fantastic story line.
2. Nicky Charles - 'Bonded'
This book was one I couldn't put down, the story kept me wanting to read to see what happened.
3. Laurann Dohner - 'Fury'
The characters captured me, this is the first book in a series so I was hooked.
4. Christine Feehan - 'Dark Prince'
Loved this book so much I ended up buying the entire series as it was released.
5. Laura B. Cooper and Christopher Cooper - 'Semper Fi'
Great Story well written
What do you read for pleasure?
I have a list of favourite authors that I keep an eye out for their releases, I usually add to that list by reading the samplers provided by authors on iBooks.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Either my iPhone or iPad, they are both linked to my iBooks account so I can access them easily.
Describe your desk
Wide open places on my iPhone, or the kitchen table on my laptop.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Redland Bay, half way between the Gold Coast and Brisbane, Australia. To see what it looks like now compared to when I was a kid living there, it's nothing like what it was. It's now highly populated and all the farmland is gone.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing in September 2013 at the encouragement of my best friend and partner. Although she patronizing me at first until she started to read what I'd written. Now she is my biggest fan.
What's the story behind your latest book?
It's based on an adaptation of the Gods. Destiny is the eldest son of Cosmo 'Mother Universe'. He's blind, lonely and can't move around like his brothers Destruction, Dream and Death can. However Destiny's Fate changes one day when due to an unfortunate accident Zandra finds herself waking up in Destiny's realm.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
After reading hundreds of really great books and some not so great ones, I figured I would finally give it a whirl. I'd thought about it a couple of times in the past but then didn't think i was good enough. This time I thought why not, wither people will love it or hate it. Who knows unless I try.

When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
