Interview with Melody S.

What motivated you to become an indie author?
I love to write and had stories that needed to be told.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Being able to use my own creativity and imagination to breathe life into an idea.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything! I wouldn't know if my writing was touching or influencing anyone without my readers.
Who are your favorite authors?
James Patterson and J.D. Robb.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The goals I have set for myself and for my family.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Singing, dancing, reading, cooking, watching television/Netflix and spending quality time with my loved ones.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I get tons of requests from other indie authors to read their stuff, so a lot of the time I do. Some of the ebooks I read are strictly downloaded and read because they are by some of my favorite authors.
What is your writing process?
I get an idea for a story and then I just start writing. I barely sleep and food becomes an afterthought. I get consumed by the story and remain so until it is done. I rarely do research and hardly ever take notes. My stories pretty much write themselves in my head and I see them playing out as if I were watching television.
How do you approach cover design?
I always strive for a cover that is not only visually appealing, but one that also tells the reader what the story is about.
What do you read for pleasure?
Investigative Fiction. Suspense.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
A Kindle.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I have found that there's nothing like getting out and meeting the people!
Describe your desk
My desk is quite organized. Color coded folders, pencils, pens, erasers, and sticky notes all have their own place. A framed photo of my family sits perched at one corner and is always placed in a position where I can see it. I also keep a small cup filled with sugary treats within reaching distance so that I can shamelessly snack while tapping away at the keys.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
The early years of my life were spent in Brooklyn, New York and I later relocated out to Long Island, Suffolk County to be exact. Both locations gave me the gritty street life perspective that is often displayed in my writing. I was also influenced to dream! I always had a colorful group of friends who were never afraid to dream and to dream big!
When did you first start writing?
I wrote my first poem at the age of 12-years-old.
