Interview with Meredith Loughran

How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
A Woman Alive: Fantasy is my freshman book so I can only base "success" by the fact that I completed then submitted it. I'm hoping my readership will grow with me.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I write because I have to. It's an intrinsic need to purge myself of all the stories and voices in my head. I know that sounds crazy but when the muse visits the writing is easy -- and I love that!
What do your fans mean to you?
I have fans? That's AMAZING and quite humbling. Without fans and people in your corner, life would simply be too hard. That being said, my fans are everything to me.
What are you working on next?
I am working on the next sequence of Deanna and Michael's story. AWA: Keys To My Heart. I've also got a 50K word novel that is now in editing phase. The title is a work in progress but I can tell you it's got vampires and it's hot.
What is your writing process?
I waffle between processes depending on the project. I'm most productive when I actually take the time to write out a detailed outline. It forces me to stay on track and really develop my characters. Most of the time I consider myself a "shoot from the hip" writer. I get an idea and just burp it on a page. It usually makes for an editing process but as long as the project gets done it's all good.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I love to read, blog, play online games, and Skype with my kids. I also keep my hands busy with knitting and crochet projects and I love baking! My homemade pizza crust is nearly tweaked to perfection.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I don't! Though recently I found an old notebook with poems I wrote between junior high and college. Lots of sadness and longing. I'm so glad I'm not in that place anymore.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I think it was in the fourth or fifth grade. One of the first impactful books I've ever read was Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell. I remember how much I related to the stranded girl - how alone I often felt. I was inspired to find creative outlets to stave off the loneliness and hide the awkward, shy kid that I was.
What do you read for pleasure?
Romance, Fantasy and Sci-Fi - pretty much in that order.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I'll let you know as soon as I see a bump in sales! So, if you like my book, please spread the word.
